Communication Costs

I just paid my first cell phone bill. Communication is going to be my greatest cruising expense, by far. It was more than my fuel bill for 680 miles of which probably 85% have been covered under power due to light winds and the need to cover some long stretches between harbors.

I logged on this morning with the meter set back to zero. Took a quick peek at SBO, Facebook, and doppler radar. Checked and sent a couple of emails. My cell phone beeped and it was a message from Verizon saying that I had exceeded my data roaming limit and will now be paying the $2.50 per MB for the rest of the month. The "Canada Plan" is good for one day's worth of very minimal usage. You must not even peek at the Internet and just checking email once a day will use it up well before the end of the month.

Even with POTL posting this by email, this thread is probably costing me a couple bucks.

Just got back from a week boating in Canada. Wife just got an I phone and was hooked. When we checked out the "Canada" plan with ATT, it was $60 -$80 a month and looked like a 2 year deal. We bought some text usage, but mostly just turned off the phones. I was going to ask the locals what they were paying, but never got around to it. I think the calls into the Nexus system ( for the first time) to clear customs probably cost $15 each, since Telus the Canadian phone company some how took over the phone while we were in US waters.

Very nice pictures. I hope to be doing this one day.

After reading your other posts it seems you found some good WI-FI spots. But when you can't... there are some options that I read about here on MSNBC about ways to avoid the truly onerous data roaming cHarges The article discusses various options including a "WI-FI bubble" that you can rent that will use the cell phone data locally and allow your phone or laptop to work in wi-fi mode.. Best of luck getting past this.
