The digression today from drogues to global warming was the final push needed to start up a political forum. It only makes sense that folks here who have come to know each other would like to discuss topics not permitted in the established forums. That's what this forum is for. Please note that posts from the new Political forum do NOT appear in the site's 24-hour activity. This forum will be fairly isolated. As always, posts or replies in the sailing forums that stray into politics will be deleted. Links to the Political forum can be found on any forum menu, the post screen, and by tomorrow morning in all the usual places. Enjoy... I guess...

Thank you, Phil

I was a bartender for many years. Allowing political (or religious) rants by a few inconsiderate patrons is often offensive to the majority of the others. Bottom line... it's bad for business.

concider the source

is what I learned at a early age. One doesn't have to read it if they don't want to.It just gives us insight to the differant personalities that are in our group. Theres a saying about opening ones mouth and removing all doubt. After awhile one learns who to read and who not to. We don't have to respond to anything we dont want too. Aint America great!!.But to have a political group would be a way of "editing" and still be free and open . Thanks for the chance to speak . Thank you for all you've done for the boating world. Keep up the great work and don't let'em get you down. Smile and make them wonder what you are up too! Ctskip

Okay, Phil

Now you're getting into the blogosphere. I'm a newspaper publisher/editor who's written political endorsements for 35 years. The best bumper sticker I ever saw read, "Politicians are like diapers, they need frequent changing."

Sailing a refuge from politics

I work for a daily newspaper. A newspaper office is one of the most politically charged places on the planet. For me, my sailing is a refuge from all that crap. I can't understand why there are those who will "take the Joy out" of something they love and pervert it with political opinion. Please don't make you boat a soapbox. Most people really don't care about your opinion. Those who do, know that they can find it on the editorial page of their daily news. Do us a favor and write to your newspaper editor. That way only those who want to hear it will have to put up with it. Thanks.

newspapers

and those who write editorials aren't the only format for free speech... We should never feel like we have to muffle our opinions to accomadate the comfort level of others...too much of that going on already! If you start to read something you don't like...quit reading it!

Liam, that can be said for any job or profession.

The effect on our psyches is the same if we are looking for a 'daily-grind' escape and run into our 'work' here. Pick a job. You don't want to read about it here. Even professional sailors avoid sailing sites. Now we have a place to 'vent'. I would never expect to see you there. :)

Kudos to Phil for putting the political stuff

in its own forum, where those (like Liam) don't have to be subjected to it if they choose not to. And where the rest of us can express ourselves like civilized persons with the goal of enlightening the less informed amongst us ;D I think I'll keep a list of those who are negative about the political forum, just to see who participates there anyway.... Cheers, Bob s/v X SAIL R 8

I agree with Richard

100% - I'm not looking for political discourse in this forum but I welcome it when it occurs because it often spices up the content and makes the topics more interesting. When it gets ugly, a little self-policing or regulating by Phil doesn't hurt. I'll give the new forum a try, but I'll be surprised if many people post there. I don't think this forum is overly political as it is and I don't expect many of us are going to go there to look for it. Politics is nothing to be ashamed about and it doesn't need to be hidden. It belongs in our daily activities, so why not here? Now that I know what Bill does, I'd like to hear more from him in that regard! Liam, if you agree with me or not politically, I'm not looking for refuge. You've made some astute comments in the past, why should you be muzzled? Scott

Sorry

I guess that I am being way too negative. I have enjoyed this site because I could learn more about sailing. I don't really care to hear more opinions about things that we are all helpless to do anything about. Sure, sure our forfathers created the first amendment for a reason. But that was then. If anyone truely thinks that their opinions are going to make even the slightest difference in 2005... You never know, your opinion might just land you in jail as an enemy combatant. Good luck and have fun working youselves up.

Doubt it will Get Visited Much

I'd no sooner visit a sailing site for political discussions as I would a political site for sailing discussions. I do however applaud Phil for trying to appease everyone.

Rick, I am with you. If I wanted to

talk politics, there are all the sites in the world to do that. I come here to hopefully learn about sailing, and to contribute where I can. I greatly apprecite the policy of "no politics" on this board, I don't come here for political discussions. In my company, I have enforced a policy of "No political discussions in the workplace." I appreciate the same policy on this board.

Don't get it

I think I kind of get Liam's point, but I'm not sure about Kevin. Kevin, do you really censure what your employees talk about? Now that's political tyrany!

Kevin

I agree, Franklin, I guess they are

letting this run as a farewell.

K

Kevin

Hilarous! I am sure you are being

sarcastic. It all began when we had some suppliers in and we went to lunch and one of my employees launched into a "Hate George Bush" tirade, which the suppliers replied to, and a business lunch turned into a political free for all, which strained relationsips from there on out. I told them that business is about business, not arguing politics with one another, or suppliers or anyone else. Guess, what you can expect and demand that your employees talk about business matters, not their own political views. When you call a company on the phone about a service that they are providing, have you ever gotten into a political discussion with them? If you did, they were not professional at their jobs.
