I just got a new Mixing Elbow in the mail for my Yanmar 1GM. I reveled in how nicely painted it was, all over. And I thought I ask, should I file off some or all of the paint that is on the side that mates with the engine.Its so smooth, it feels like when I goupe it up with a a seal and selant, I will not get a good seal.What do you guys think. Leave it smooth with paint, or rough it up a bit?

Don't use a file. Paint remover might be ok but it doesn't need to be scratched.

Don't remove it too quick.

Many of todays coatings are designed to offer protection in extreme environments. Additionally, by removing it from one surface you allow entrance under this protection to other surfaces.
Check with the supplier or manufacturer before removing these coatings.
I've been in the mechanical parts business for quite a while and I'm amazed at the new technology and coatings that are in use today.
