Question

I do not have any advice to offer on your inquiry but I thought you may be able to offer some assistance with my Javelin. If you don't mind, will you describe how your mast step is situated? I have a mid 70's Javelin that is completely rotted out under the foredeck. I am repairing this section but I cannot figure out how the step should be mounted. Does it mount on top of the plywood or does it go through the plywood to the centerboard trunk? How is the step fastened down? Greatly appreciated.... JBB

Mast Step

The mast should be mounted directly to the keel. Mine has a 4X5 inch raised area out of Glass. On top of this is a piece of Mahogany with the mast base located ( affixed) atop of this is a short section of mast that protrudes through the deck and has a mast step on top to allow the rapid stepping and de-stepping of the mast. Rotten plywood. Must be a common problem. I plan on making a decking in three pieces that will allow for getting the plywood into the small area. If you change yours make sure that you coat the plywood in epoxy ! then it will not happen again!
