hunter 1980 33' cherubini fort lauderdale
Hello everyone, I am happy to be on the site as a new owner instead of just looking. I just purchased a 1980 33' Cherubini after searching for over a year. I have found much info that has been very helpful in making what I believe was a good choice of boats.
I purchased the boat in Hudson Fl about three weeks ago, spent some time getting her ready then set off to ft. laud. What a adventure! Headed south past Tampa then entered the waterway that takes you across fl by way of lake Okechobee to Ft. laud. (six days two overnights).
Problems along the way, you bet. first I discovered that non of the charging systems were working:Alternator, wind or solar. Next I discovered that no one could hear my radio calls and then the rain and crab pots arrived. My trip continued like this all the way home and I loved it!
Now that I am safely home with the boat I would like to ask for advice. When I went over the side to clear the traps from the prop I discovered were the leak had been coming from. the strut that holds the prop shaft was very loose, I could move it about an inch from side to side. I am hauling her out this week and would like to know if any of you have had this problem before and what needs to be done. As for the electrical the boat must have been hit by lightning or just had a bad short. any and all info will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, and so far I'm still happy I have her

Congrats on the new hunter,
First, the cherubini's were and still are great boats.
Sounds like a fun trip for sure.
as far as the eletrical issues, this could be the charging controller on the solar panel as most solar panels have a 20 yr warranty and rarely go bad unless physical damage like a tree lumb or a foot thru the glass.

The loose stut also can and probably has damaged the cutlass bearing.

Sounds like you have some yard time ahead of you but when your done you will have a great sea worthy boat.

Yoou will enjoy the room and the ways they handle.

Fair winds.

Congrats "Jib", a great boat like Chuck says. I know, I own her big sister. You'll find a lot of info on the H33 here on Hunter Owners(HOW). You know that there is a forum just for the Cherubinis. It is under "Forums" and then "Hunter Owner Forums".

I also agree with Chuck about "yard time". One of my first projects was rebedding the strut using new bolts, locknuts, and larger fender washers. All stainless of course. Follow that with aligning the engine and shaft to the strut.

If there is any wiggle of the strut on the shaft then you will have to replace the cutlass bearing. Since you are going to rebed and rebolt you might just slide the strut off the shaft and have a shop replace the bearing. Lots easier than doing it on the boat. Obviously the prop has to come off which might require a wheel puller.

Electrically I think we have to wait until you have checked out the system and provide more information. Good luck with getting her shipshape.

Congratulations! Similar story ... I bought a 1981 Hunter 30 last year but had a much less eventful trip from Ft. Pierce to Melbourne, FL via the intercostal. Had a similar problem with the sturt bearing and had the yard replace it during 1st haul-out. My current challenge in throttle cable replacement (separate forum thread). Good luck! mg

Congrats on your new boat. Best of luck with her. I have to say however, I find it hard to believe you bought the boat WITHOUT a survey. You know the old adage, a boat is a hole in the water into which you pour money. Some boats require a whole lot more of the money than others. I wish you well and hope you don't have to spend a fortune fixing her up.

Jib,
Congrats on your new Boat.
A survey was ordered for my first sail boat which did provide a little insight for systems that could make or break a good hobby.
Since my first boat was purchased only six months ago I to will be asking for advice from seasoned vets of the Hunter world.
ENJOY!!
