I am the proud owner of a new to me '78 Hunter 27'. Nice boat, new love of my life. I need to tweek a few things, on and below decks. I would like to start with a mast question. Where the main feed into the mast slot I seem to be missing a cover of some sort. I don't find a downhaul method, but if I rigged one the main cars would fall out of the slot when I pulled the boom down. The main cars fall out when I lower the main. I used a car stop last year and the main was almost to high to cover in dockage. I bought in august and this is Michigan, so, I didn't use her very long. This summer is right around the corner, can't wait. If the is a cover fot the mast I would like a description or a photo so I can fabricate one. If worst comes to worst, where can I buy one? Thanks Dennis

Main Track

You should see a detent in the track just above the adjustable slide track for the boom. There is a screw hole to the right of the detent (if you are facing forward). There should be a small metal cover that screws into the mast amd covers the detent (or cutout). This keeps your sail slides from falling out when you lower the mast. It should be very simple to make one.

An alternative to the cover...

would be to get a sail track lock (in the West Marine catalog). It's a thumb-screw attached to a slug that slides into the sail slide groove and allows you to tighten it down just above the gate to keep the main from sliding back out the gate.

Mine was missing too...

when I bought my '78 H27 back in the early '80's. I fabricated one crom a piece of stainless that worked fine for many years until I sold the boat. You could probably buy one somewhere (as mentioned West Marine) and it would be easier than making one. Not a big problem. Good luck with your boat.
