Boat is a 1980 25 in good condition. The only issue I am dealing with is finding a motor since the owner would not part with his. He had a 9.9 Johnson 2 cycle which you can no longer buy. I found some used one's for $600-$700 but they are 1977 or do I go for a 4 cycle which is a weight issue unless I go down in hp. Thoughts?

Are you looking around on Craigslist for motors? If its cheap and runs, I'd go for an old Johnson. Newer motors are hugely expensive. I'm partial, having had the same Johnson engine myself on my old Cal 21.

Congrats on the new ODay! :)

Congrats on the boat! I have a 1999 Johnson longshaft 8 hp two stroke, and I wouldn't part with it either. I wouldn't get a used Johnson that old because it probably has a side shift. Mine has the shift in front of the engine and it's mounted on my 222. Unless you buy a remote that mounts on the tiller. If you buy a four stroke, you'll probably need to change your bracket out to a heavy duty bracket if you don't already have one on there now. These brackets are expensive and the job might involve having to replace the fiber block on your transom. Although, Rudy Nickerson of D&R Marine had some heavy duty brackets that would take a four stroke engine that were cheaper than the popular bracket. I would check the inside of the transom of your boat to make sure that it's strong enough for these four stroke engines. Just the torque from these engines can stove in the transom of an O'Day 25. One of the guys on this forum had it happen to him. Oddly enough, he had a regular el cheapo bracket like mine holding his engine, and it never got damaged. Also, the large hole that it made in his stern was above the waterline, thank the good Lord for small favors. He had his whole family on board and was able to sail it back. All he did was accidentally over accelerate that 4 stroke outboard in forward gear, and the force of that engine stove that transom right in. I hate four strokes. I'm going to try to stick with my Johnson for as long as I can. Anyway I'm a "Geezer" so I'll probably croak before my engine. :D

Well, I would go with what the others have said. Craigslist is your friend and perhaps look around at some local repair shops. They have some left over from repairs or whatnot and at times have them for sale in their shop.

Mine is an 8.0 Johnson longshaft, and one day will tell you a very funny story about that :)

Its, an 86 I think and runs great. More than enough power and has a generator built in as well. Came with the boat when I bought it, and I believe it was purchased new with the boat and has been with her ever since.

They are out there you just have to look hard and dig deep. People hold out on them as I have discovered but with some prodding they might let one go :) There seems to be the four stroke vs two issue , people I know are hugging the two strokes with new regulations coming along requiring four strokes.

I have an OMC motor bracket on mine. Apparently it hasn't been made in years as I couldn't find any info for it online. Saw one on ebay last winter.
It's a heavy duty bracket and seems to work quite well.

Hey second post. I also the new owner of an Oday 25 1975 three days ago. I have two motors. The Suzuki 8 hp. two stroke is a 1999 model DT8C. I have not run this motor as the one that was on runs great and I am going to keep it. This motor was running a year ago and the 4 year old survey indicated it was in good shape. The only reason the past owner changed it out two a 4 stroke was he said the two stroke was to noisy. If interested call 256-343-3339 Steve I hope that is allowed as I am very new to this sight. If interested I could get it tested and running.

Thanks everyone! Found a used 9.9 Johnson in great shape and have all the controls for it to fit my boat. Will stay in touch and let everyone know how our first sail turns out. We have about 50 mile sail home early next week.

To both new owners of OD 25's...make sure and thoroughly inspect your bulkheads where the chainplates are attached. My "new" '77 25 had a bulkhead fail while sailing (her maiden voyage - 80 mile trip home) which resulted in a dismasting. The chainplate ripped out of the bulkhead and shot through the deck! Quite a surprise on a breezy Sunday afternoon on the Chesapeake. My version had the original gold/orange thick vinyl covering both sides of the bulkheads masking the 30 year old wood rot beneath. Am in the middle of replacing both bulkheads now. I really like the boat, she sails well and powers well too....just use due diligence when inspecting your bulkheads.

Three weeks ago I found a Merc 7.5 long shaft that runs great. They are out there, $300 Craigslist is still the best. Happy sailing.

Congrats on your new boat!

Our Oday 23 came with an 1989 Evinrude 9.9, 2-stoke ourboard. I have seen them locally sold on Craigslist, too. Enjoy your new Oday !
