I'm the proud new owner of a 1985 Hunter 22 that I have named the Moccasin. She is in great shape for her age, and only needs minor repairs and touchups, but could go out on the water right now as is. The previous owner had her out a few weeks before I purchased her. Outside of normal items that would need to be replaced on a 35-year-old sailboat, the big items that are damaged remain the trailer, the mainmast, and the kitchen sink that was removed by the previous owner.
Luckily I have the sink and will need to put it back in and hook it up.
The small repairs remain a total pressure wash, repainting of the boat (inside and out), replacement cushions, full electrical refit, replacing the wooden hatch with something else, and replacing both of the portholes in the v berth, as well as the port side long window in the sitting compartment. The starboard long window is original and doesn't leak so why break what isn't broken right?
I'm not a sailor at all and purchased this boat to be more of a coastal troller to access small islands and beaches around my area of Florida with an outboard motor. Or to travel around some of the deepwater lakes. I have an interest in learning to sail, but right now, I have way too much on my plate to spend the time needed to learn.
I'm planning on documenting my refit of the Moccasin on my YouTube channel over the next few years with the goal of having all of the refits done and ready to sail in the annual Gasparilla Pirate invasion which occurs annually in Tampa every year. I'm also planning on mounting some swivel guns on her after and bow that can fire blanks. Unlike other sailing channels that spend small fortunes to refit their boats, I plan to refit my girl on a tight budget. Obviously, I can't skimp on the bottom or top paint, that is not negotiable. But most other items can be Macgyvered and made to work just as well as their more expensive OEM counterparts.
