We are the new owners of this boat and are also new to sailing. We have many questions to ask so we hope all will patient. Our boat hasn't any bottom paint and is now going to be sailed in Buzzards Bay. Our cast iron keel is showing some rust where it meets the keel and we need to knw how to address this prior to putting on a barrier coat and bottom paint. Also have oneMaxwell 17 selftailing winch with a piece misssing from the drum and we can't seem to find the Maxwell brand anymore. does anybody knw if these winches can be repaired or do they need to be replaced? Thanks in advance for any help.

Welcome

We splashed our "new" (to us) 1984 25.5(sk, o/b) last May. Sailed her all summer. Had a great time. She's a great boat and sails quite well. As a primer for sailing, get your hands on a copy of "Sailing for Dummies" by the Isler couple. Read it a few times. We keep a copy on the boat. Might consider a weekend sailing course. There's no hurry. Learn at your own pace and enjoy each time you go out. Learn and practice the systems on your boat. Above all, learn to be safe and sail within your capabilities. The keel will rust. Its the nature of the beast. When you do the bottom, refer to the paint manufacturer's recommendation for applying a barrier coat. Suggest http://www.yachtpaint.com for some general information and also for possible solutions. Our boat had a VC Tar barrier coat, we painted with Micron CSC before splash and it did OK this year. We're in fresh water so you need to select the right paint for your local conditions. Unfortunately, Maxwell is no longer in business. Our winches are OK, so I don't know much about potential replacements. As you get her ready, don't be afraid to ask questions and / or post progress reports.

Maxwell

Maxwell winch parts may be available from a company (can't remember the name) that was given the "extras" when Maxwell shifted to their current products. There was a link to the comapny on the Maxwell site a year or so ago. Might try them, but they are not in the US. Another source to look into are boat salvage years. Many Maxwell winches were put on production boats in years past. Best of luck! Since many of us have these, pass along any information on replacement parts you get.

25.5 owner too

H1, We have sailed our 1984 25.5 for 2 seasons now, we were new to it also. We love the boat and it does sail nicely, very stable, we've had the rails in the water and comes rights when you ease off. Ours had bottom paint but we did sand a bit and the rust spots and put a new coat of bottom paint, interlux I think it was, $45 quart. Enjoy, Pam % Shirley

parts

Found the link. Try this: www.arco-winches.com The company is in Australia. Tel +61 2 9623 2448 Maxwell sold thier stock of sheet winch parts to Arco around 2004. The salvage yard approach may be useful, but a new replacement part might be mighty hard to find in the US.

Congrats...

I have a '85 25.5. She's a great boat. Don't worry about the keel rust-for us it's a matter of routine maintenance :) As regrads the winches, I have to believe that you should be able to get parts for a rebuild. As a suggestion, you might want to make arrangements with a local (experienced) sailor to go out with you a few times. Good luck, have fun and welcome to the club...

THANKS Boatbum

I followed the link you gave me and received a prompt reply from Allen at arco-winches. He sent me a diagram of the parts breakdown for a 17st winch and let me know the price. Great response from him and great help from you and all other respondents. Thanks to all.
