New owner of 1982 H25 - need suggestions on restoring

Hello All,
My wife and I have just purchased a 1982 H25 so we can learn to sail. We are previous powerboat owners. We are 60 and are looking forward to a new type of cruising. As we look at the H25 we see we really need to replace the grab rails as they are very thin and breaking off where the thin lip of wood is that covers the hatch track. Any suggestions on this? We also need to replace the forward hatch and some of the ports. Thoughts? If you are an owner of this model do you have suggestions for improvements to the interior ( my wife's question)?

Years ago I had an H25 with a leaky forward hatch... This boat has a trapezoid-shaped hatch that is no longer manufactured, but there is a square hatch that will cover the hole in the deck and still allow the hatch hardware to function normally. It doesn't have a flange to fit into the hole, just a flat surface to screw onto the deck.

If you check the archives on this site, the photos are still there from when I installed it... and I believe the make/model of the hatch is mentioned in the archives.

Congrats on your new boat! We really enjoyed our '25 when we had it, and didn't want to sell her... but couldn't sail her to Germany when I got orders. :)

I have a 1981 model

I have the 81 which should be identical to yours. I recomend you replace the water tank which I did. There is a 15 gal rubberized tank that fits and works great. I believe I purchased that from Defender. I also moved the water filler location from the locker which always ran water to the bildge to the cockpit floor near the locker opening several inches from the front of the cockpit. The gray opening ports are available on this site and you may need replacements or not depending on the condition. Inside functions well. I have removed the two leanbacks on the main cabin bunks which makes them more comfortable for sleeping. I do not use the ice box except for storage as it is very poor at keeping ice. I purchased a Coleman Marine Cooler which fits under the table in the main cabin and keeps ice at least a week.
For batteries I use two six volt golf cart batteries which have lasted 6 years so far. I have a 33 watt flexable solar panel that keeps them fully charged. Only need to add some water once a year for them. I keep them in the locker and added a two position switch so I could have a backup set of batteries but that has never been necessary so far. I have a 1500 watt inverter to run cd player and electric drill from time to time.
I have three head sails which are needed in my area. 150 Genoa a 100 working jib and a 65sq ft heavy weather sail. I recomend the heavy weather sail be closer to 45-50 sq ft. The main sail had one reef point and I have added a second. In 25-30 knots I can sail with a double reef and the heavy weather jib.
My wood is in better shape than yours and I try to keep cetol on it and clean it every few years and recoat with cetol.
I had to replace the collar underneath the rudder/tiller assembly. A machine shop made one for me out of teflon which has held up about 6 years at this point.
I have the shallow draft model drawing 2 ft 11 inches. Great for my area of sailing.
This boat is easy to keep up and requires very little maintenance. Great for cruising the rivers and sounds in North Carolina. I know you will enjoy it.:)

We are moving along well. We pulled the boat last week and had the yard at Norton's polish the boat. It took about twice as long as normal they said because it looked like it had not been polished since it was bought in 1982! Looks great now. We will be replacing the forward hatch and the water bladder and adding a shore power connection. Also we will replace and add batteries as well a get a new 9.9 Yamaha. Since I am not mechanically inclined and have a business to run I am having the yard do the work. I realize this may not be the most economical path but my wife wants these things done along with a list of about 15 other items. She has agreed to try going for a weekend and then maybe later a week so I need to make it work. QUESTION - there are no clothes lockers on a 25' so what is the best idea to stow clothing? Mainly hers!

I have done so much in modification to my '74 H25 that I don't know where to start. Much of this has been needed repair/restoration-- filling the cored deck, replacing bulkheads, replacing the cabin sole, etc. Much of it has been needed improvement-- new maststep, one low bulkhead in the cabin, strengthening the keel attachment with fiberglass plates, etc. Much of it has been additions to the original basic design-- new foredeck hatch, lav sink in the head, anchor roller, Dorade boxes.
