I just bought my first boat, 1981 O'Day 30. She demonstrated terrible weather helm in 20+ knots. She is out for the season now. I am looking for copies of owners manuals and details on the recommended rigging tuning process. I read things like mast rake etc. and don't have a clue where to start. But, I know she should sail with a lot less effort. Also, she came with a Furlex 200S. Is that standard with the O-30? MY 150 Genoa does not have a cut back at the tack. Is this a problem? it's not so much the rigging but many boats tend to show more weather helf over 20 kts. do you reef your main?? do you shorten your headsail?? It sounds like your boat is not balanced well in higer winds.

Oday 30 manuals
Steve, I tried for a year or two to get this type of manual without any luck. I have a '78 Oday 30 with a standard fin keel. I sail on Lake Erie out of Port Dover and regularly sail in 20 plus knots I have about 9" of rake at the boom with no backstay tension on. At 16 to 25 knots I use a 100% headsail and full main with little or no weather helm. At above 25 knots I roll the headsail in about 1/4 and reef the main to its 1st. reef point this does me up to about 30 knots. Above 30 I reef the head sail further and go to the second reef on the main. I also find if I keep the boat below 25 deg. of heel weather helm is about 5 deg. max and my auto pilot has no problems.
