New Owner, Hull # 476

Hello! Not my first post, but here's my official introduction.

I took delivery of hull 476 on Friday morning. It's a wing keel/standard rig which was well kept by her previous owners. Had a bit of excitement with a blown out tire on I-75 in downtown Detroit on Friday afternoon with no spare! Made it home (finally), and all is well.

My home waters are Lake St. Clair, north of Detroit. It's a 430 square mile lake that is part of the Great Lakes chain, connecting Lake Huron and Lake Erie. I have been sailing for most of my life, sailing keelboats for the last 16 years. I am scaling back from a 30 foot Pearson Flyer, which I have owned since 2002. In the time I owned the Flyer, I have sailed 10 Mackinac races.

I will be daysailing and club racing the Capri in a PHRF fleet. I have gotten a lot of info on this forum already, and am looking forward to getting my feet wet on the new boat.

Gotta let us know if the boat feels like a slug compared to the flyer. Interesting step down from the flyer too... but probably a good one for mixed fleet racing.

Only sailed the boat once so far - when I took it for a test sail. We flew the main and a 155, in winds varying from about 8 to 15 knots. Sure didn't feel like a slug.

The Flyer was a great boat - I loved it. But things change, having a tougher time getting crew these days, and I have pretty much decided that if I am going to do any more distance racing, it'll be on someone else's boat! The costs and logistic nightmares got to me too much for me. My wife and I recently bought a vacation home up on Lake Huron, and I wanted to be able to trailer a boat up to there for the occasional week or so of down time. Hence the decision to do a trailerable. Considered S2 6.7/6.9 and 7.9 (the 7.9's have an active fleet here), but the costs for a decent 7.9 scared me off, and I couldn't find a decent 6.7 in my area.

Actually, if you compare the CP22 with the Flyer, most of the key numbers (displacement to sail area, etc) are pretty close. Sure the maximium speeds will be slower, but I don't think the overall impression will be that much different. And now I can race with half the number of crew I needed on the Flyer, sails and other parts are cheaper, maintenance is easier, the list goes on. I'll post up some more comparisons after I get some time under my belt.
