New owner 19 (93-96)

Since it looks like there are under 200 hulls (H 19 (93-96)) out there, this might be a shot in the dark, but I will give it a try anyway. A couple of questions:Does anyone with a H 19 (93-96) have any spinnaker related information/feedback they would be willing to share?Why is the rudder so damn heavy? I almost dropped a nut trying to get it out from under the trailer, is the rest of the boat so heavily built?

is the rudder full of water?

I've seen rudders and other parts of a boat get a crack in them allowing water in. This could make your rudder heavy to handle. I'm not familiar with the construction of that boat, however. When you have a few minutes inspect your rudder for any cracks in the seams. My Hunter 25.5 rudder had a few cracks where the halves were joined, which I patched with 3m5200.

I think they are all heavy

I think all 23.5's and 19's had heavy rudders that were cored with a fiber glass resin type material. I think it is refered to as a polyester adhesive. Any way all of these boats have a very heavy rudder. It does help you to low the rudder while sailing after hitting a bump, but it makes raising the rudder very hard.

Rudder doesn't seem heavy to me...

Hello,My '95 H19 has what I consider a reasonably weighted, floating rudder. Never took it off, though. No experience w/ a spinnaker. Considering a furling 135 genoa instead for light days.Rgds,CJV

Too weight conscious?

Thanks for the response. Although I have not float-tested my rudder, I’m reasonably sure it has little to no chance of keeping itself anywhere near the surface if I were to try. The tiller is pretty massive (you could kill a dead pig with it) being built out of stainless steel, which may be the culprit. Again, I just bought the boat and have had little time to inspect it closely, maybe I am just over-sensitive to weight coming from a offshore racing / windsurfing background.
