Charles - this IS Golden advice! Thanks.
Would SeaFoam also work in this application (cleaning out the gunk in a carb)?

It is my understanding that Tohatsu makes Mercury outboards less than 30 HP. BrianW

Carbs gumming up has always been an issue. It wasnt so bad back when we had big V8's, the engine heat would boil them dry. But small engines have always had trouble, even 50 years ago and farther back. Yes, the gas is much worse today, and deteriorates much faster, but the same principles suggested by Dave, that apply to todays engines, applied back then. Most small engines back then had a fuel shutoff and carb drains. Many motorcycles, even in the 60's, had them as well.

So listen to that advice and follow it. Simply running it out of gas will alleviate so many problems its simply a no brainer. In addition, 2 stroke oil mixed with the 4 stroke fuel at 100:1 will do just about as good as any additive you can buy, while also offering corrosion protection.

My opinion is Honda is the Mercedes of boat motors. And here, you get what you pay for. But as stated, if you have a crappy dealer, the best motor in the world is going to be a nightmare. Unless you can fix it yourself.

It is interesting that no matter what brand outboard, someone has had troubles with all of them, it seems and others have great things to say. SeaFoam is another thing that is good to run through your carburetor to keep it clean. And I agree with the comment about disconnecting the fuel line and running the carb empty after each use. That goes a long way and most problems are with dirty carbs. To say a Tohastu or Nissan 3.5 is bad in comparison to the Honda 4 stroke with more HP is a bit unfair. If you bought a too small outboard with only a motor mounted tank, what do you expect? Of course they don't go as far between fill ups and if the HP isn't adequate, then I guess you simply bought the wrong motor to start with. If you bought a larger motor of the same brand with a remote tank, maybe you'd speak differently.
