Thanks.

Hunter 27', Tohatsu 8hp 2 stroke. would like an extra 2hp for the rougher conditions, but anything more would be a waste.

I looked at a 1986 and a 1988 Catalina 27 before I bought mine, the 86 had a inboard but hadn't been maintained well for many years, didn't even trust that to leave the dock so not sure how it pushed the boat, but the 88 had a honda 9.9 4 stroke that did just fine.

Friend has a 1984 Catalina 25 with a johnson 9.9 2 stroke, pushes the boat along nicely, couldn't use any more motor if he had it...

I put a used 15hp 2 strk Johnson. I could not get it to run reliably, it would stall when I needed it the most. I found a 18hp 2 stk (95 lbs) Tohatsu that was only used once and then garaged. I was able to pick that up for $600. I don't need the extra hp but I couldn't resist the price. It is a pull start and I really wanted an electric start. I hooked up the remote and took it out a couple of weeks ago and it runs great. It is much quieter than the Johnson. I was out with Novelman last weekend and it is so quiet, when I went to the mast to lower the sails I had to keep asking him if the idling motor was still running.
BTW On Ebay I found a flywheel and starter motor with solenoid for $100. It arrived yesterday and I will install today.

Good score! I know 9.9 can handle it I am thinking 15 would be better because we travel Heavy. I am 300lbs and you know how much the RUM and coke and Ice can add....lol is it hard to convert to fixed mount with shift and cables? Also I wonder if it will void any kinda warranty. I will know tomorrow I going to get a quote.

I would look at it from gross tonnage, and say that unless you are over 10k lbs, the 9.9 will be fine. My boat is listed at 5k dry and empty. I suspect it normally sits at the dock a bit over 6k lbs, and by the time we load bodies, provisions and personal items for long weekend trips, we may well exceed 7.5k lbs... I think the catalina may be slightly heavier than I am though, so you may well be close to 10k fully loaded.

That is a good way to think about it, and I think your math is right on. I cant wait to get out there and see what kind of deals I might make this time of the year.

After pulling the pull start handle off of the 86 tiller controlled 8hp Johnson Sailmaster......twice, in high winds, while trying to dock, I bought the Yamaha 4st High Thrust with remote and tilt. We love it. No more diving in the lazerette to start, change gears or speed. Its really quiet and the high
thrust prop and lower gear ratio in the bottom make it very responsive. We are at hulll speed with less than 1/2 throttle on calm days, leaving plenty of push in reserve for wind and waves. The bigger cowling won't let you tip it up out of the water without modifying the opening. Also, watch out for the down position. You can eat your rudder. I put a stop block in place to prevent that this year (after repairing the rudder).

We have a 15 hp on our 1977 with a power thruster attached that makes backing out of the slip a piece of cake and provides hull speed without max rpms and like it very much.

Well? Is the Yamaha mounted on the boat yet and if so, how do you like it??

Just put it on yesterday! Went out for test run all I can say is WOW it really is nice. So quiet and brought us up to 5kts with no problem. I didn't push it at all. Install went very smooth. No problems with tilt range either. We are so happy to have it before the end of season.

Now that's just mean. Mine is mounted in the outboard cutout. I'd like to fill that in and
mount the engine as yours is mounted.
Here's a story. After getting our engine mounted and breaking it in we had 2 weeks of rain. Going to the boat for a quick check, I decided to fire up the motor. It was dark. Popped the key in and cranked it, nothing. Pushed the key in(for the electronic choke) while cranking and still nothing. Pumped up the bulb, tried manual choke, still nothing. Got flashlight and was preparing to dive into the lazerette when I knelt on something that gave a stabbing pain in the kneecap. After rolling around in the bottom of the cockpit, I finally found out what had 'bit' me. It was a little horseshoe shaped piece of plastic....................guess what. I put the safety clip on, touched the key and it was running.........operator error and I've never forgotten to put it on since.
