I need to know what is the best make of 4 stroke long shaft electric start outboard engine with cockpit controls to easily place in the lazarette of my Coronado 25 keel sailboat? Any suggestions would be most helpful.Thank you

The best 4 stroke is a 2 stroke!!

The best make of a 4 stroke is to buy a 2 stroke! Yamaha 2 strokes are simple, powerful, lightweight, very reliable & burn a 100:1 mix of synthetic blend so are relatively clean burning and are far more simple and reliable than a bulky, less torque 4 stroke. I purchased a 4 stroke last summer for my RIB and sold it three weeks later! Yamaha two strokes are still available in 8hp, 10hp & 15hp. Oh yeah and my 4 stroke did NOT get anywhere near the rated GPH burn that the 4 stroke proponents claim and was virtually identical in fuel consumption to my two stroke..

One name...

I sold my Coronado 25 last year and got a bigger boat.I had several configurations aboard my Coronado but found the best was the last one...one name says it all...MERCURY. There are alot of stuff out there and these days MOST of it is made"over there".Used a Yamahamma...and a Taiatsu (sp?) but found best results with a simple 9.9 Mercury long shaft 2 stroke. Find yours soon as they are being discontinued..actually,I think EPA has mandated no more 2 stroke production after 2008..I think. I had to trim my transome a bit to get the long shaft up out of the water when under sail but other than that..no problems.Oh,it did foul a plug on me once..after 9 months of running (ALOT),we sail down here almost year round so thats impressive. I cannot confirm that 4 strokes are quieter..or more fuel efficient as thats not been my experience with them..I've found little better than 2 stroke. So, define your budget and look around..make sure you get a long shaft or it'll come outta the water anytime you catch a good wave or wake, get a bit larger battery than required and mount it oposite the fuel tank in the Lazzerette..house battery should be seperate from engine battery..but able to combine...and goodluck Whatever you choose..it'll get you outta the Marina and let you use the most important engine a Sailboat comes with...THE SAILS. >>> David
