New O'Day owner 1978 23' HELP

Hi,

I just purchased my first sailboat. I'm a recovering power-boater whose has never sailed. The O'Day is a fixer upper. I'm in the process of removing 30+ years of bottom paint and general repairs. The masts and metal supports are in good shape but the electrical and ropes are a mess. The sails are OK as well as the 9.9 Johnson OB.

I am looking for wiring diagrams and roping diagrams and general help so I can finish the restoration and this beauty in the water.

Anyone interested in lending a hand?

First...Congrats! You've come to the right place - I was also a recovering power-boat owner though I still have my ski-boat I'd wished and schemed and finally pulled the trigger on getting a sailboat - I have to THANK SO MANY FOLKS on this site for everything from advice to offers and just support thru my personal fixer upper process... they even let you gripe here!!
I'v just received a wiring diagram i can send your way if you include your email.
D&R Marine is a tremendous resource as well.
A word of advice; when posting a specific question on a part or area of your vessel, do include as comprehensive of a picture as you can... a digital photo be it from a camera even a cell phone is worth 1,000,000 words!!
ALSO: I'v recently scooped up a FANTASTIC resource - Essential Boat Maintenance A Comprehensive Guide to Boat Improvement, Refitting and Repair By Pat Manley and Rupert Holmes. it was about $20 on AMAZON.com. Hard cover, thick 'ol pages you can leave it right on board!
Again, Congratulations and lookin' forward to seeing just what you got yourself into!

Also, don't be afraid to just tear into something. I've found that to be the best way to get started. For example, the wiring. A diagram will help, but the boats electrical circuits look a hell of alot different from the diagram laying on your back in the hold upside down with dust and sweat in your eyes! Dont be afraid to just start digging in and tracing things down. Of course u need to have or acquire a bit of knowledge of basic circuits. U can get that from the book above, or don casey's " this old boat". Also most of us have sources for best prices on wiring, parts, etc.

Ratchet crimped and wire stripper. One of the best things I ever bought. Best thing? Tough one. Maybe the angle grinder. Not counting the basics like a table saw, pick up truck, and pocket knife.
