New O'Day 240 owner

I recently purchased a 1988 240 and had it trailered to my location. We walked the mast up but now I have trouble raising the jib sail.
I have a self-furling jib. The jib halyard rises easily when there is no tension placed on it but once I add the sail or place tension on the halyard it seems to slide out of the sheave (pulley) and stop rising.
Does anyone know why this is happening and how to fix it?

Is this is the standard 240 jib halyard that attaches at the base of the furler. If so, I will take pictures of mine later on today so you can see how it is set up.

Yes it is this is the standard jib halyard. My problem is at the top of the furler. It seems that the halyard slips out of the pulley when tension is applied.

Have a look at the pictures to confirm that your installation looks like this. If it does then it is a mechanical problem not a setup issue. I am sure that it is a mechanical issue but it always pays to eliminate the obvious.
