New nonskid treatments for decks

I'm about to undertake a major project -- I need to put new nonskid on my 30 foot boat's decks. It originally had teak, that was removed and fiberglassed over. Now, the nonskid they mixed in during that refit (about 10 years ago) has lost its bite. I would like to know what methods other people have used to succesfully add nonskid coatings to their decks. I've ruled out treadmaster -- it's just too expensive. What grit sand, type of paint, etc., works the best? Any recommendations on paint brands or insight would be appreciated. Thanks in advance! -Mark Swart mark.swart@us.army.mil

Pumace

First mask the nonskid areas. Next roughten the surface with a brass rotary brush in a electric drill. Next is a two man job. One person paints a coat of primer and the second person sprinkles pumace from a pepper shaker over the wet paint two to three feet over the surface for even coverage. Allow to dry and apply two coats of paint useing deglosser(one pint deglosser to one quart of paint). Pumace can be bought at West Marine or if you know a dentist it is medium pumace for cleaning teeth, Same stuff. Practice on a piece of plywood. When your deck is done this method you have your choice of color, gloss and consistency of the pumace.

It is now 2003

Interlux works very well. One or two part, with their additives for gloss reduction and non-skid. They also make a non-skid paint in white and grey. Forget sand and all the rest and spend the extra $1.98 :).

I just did my 27' cherubini last weekend

used West marine's anti skid paint. I went with it based on an excellent rating from the Practical Sailor article a few months ago. I was rated the best buy. Here is what I did: -sanded with palm sander 100 grit -washed with soap and water -wiped area down with acetone- -maked with blue masking tape -rolled on with fine celled roller and tough spots with foam brush. make shure to shake the west can well and constantly stir. It took two coats and looks great. Make sure you have enough paint. Its a pain to come back the next day for the second coat. I don't trust leaving the tape on overnight. I started in the morning and was done with both coats by late afternoon.
