Does anyone out there know anything about the 5 hp OHV air cooled outboard by briggs and co. I have tried to talk to the peaple that sell them but they don't seem to know much more than the price of the thing. Anybody out there have one or know someone that uses one on a sail boat?

Not on a sailboat but

My dock neighbour has one for his inflatable. He has not been unhappy with its performance or reliability but is selling it because of its weight and bulkiness. It is somewhat larger than a conventional OB because of the air intake.

B and S outboard

I have one that I use on my V222 and it has been very good actually. I put a lower motor mount on the boat, because the outboard has a reg. shaft. As to the weight it weighs 56 lbs, but I have had no trouble when mounting it. I rigged it where I have the throttle control in the cockpit too which makes control a lot easier where the motor is mounted lower. For the money it is a good engine, and I have always had good luck with my B and S garden tractors and mowers. Good engines. Besides I kind of like the air cooled part where the engine can be run without water running through it! Of course everyone to their own thinking!

Fresh water?

As to the fresh water question, well when you get the instructions, it simply says, that if you use the engine in salt water, to rinse it off after use, due to the corrosive affects from salt water. I believe the other engine manufacturers tell the same story!

Briggs

I bought a Briggs outboard for the Catalina -22 that we had for the last couple of years. It pushed the boat to more than 5 knots in three foot waves out in Lake Michigan. It always started ,never leaked oil.It was a little louder than I would have liked.I would most definitely buy another

went looking

looked at a Yamaha 2.5 hp today and could not beleave they could keep a straight face as they told me the motor was $800.00 FOR A 2.5 hp I may end up with a briggs motor but I'm going to overhaul my old sears 5hp 2 stroke one last time and see if I can get it reliable again. For $700.00 plus tax I can give it one more try. For those of you that have or have used one of the briggs motors how do you keep it up in the "sailing position"? On my Mariner I have a nice big lifting bracet but I still would need to bring the motor up so the shaft is almost horizonal. The short shaft is just fine the bracet adjust down plenty low but looking at the motor in the store all I see is trim adjustment but no built in way of keeping the motor all the way up and there for out of the water even when I'm scaring the by heeling to the point that the ports are in the water

Briggs on motor mount

The motor mount I have allows me to lift the motor out of the water and I then hold it up with a clip! Of course the motor itself allows you to adjust the angle the prop is in the water to as well! The price was one reason I went with the B and S too! Outboards have gotten out of sight, but I guess everything has!

Lawn Mower Engine?

If were talking about the same engine....Were talking about what is really a air cooled, four cycle "lawn mower" type engine mounted atop a outboard lower unit. If this is the case.....I feel your money would be much better spent on a good used two cycle outboard with a long shaft (I assume you would need a long shaft). I don't know what size your boat is(?). I can tell you I've had a O'Day 22 for 34 years. Durning that time I have used everything from a Johnson 3HP to a Volvo 9.9HP (48 lbs.), they all worked fine. Currently have a 1999 Evirude 6HP (two cycle) and it seems ideal. Good Luck!

If you go to the Briggs site...

They don't reccomend it for salt water and if it's used in salt water they void the warranty.

no info on motor

I tried looking into the motor on the briggs site but could not fined any info on the outboard so then I tried calling the place that makes the motor and talked to a guy there but he was really no help. I've looked the motor over 3 times and still see no way of keeping it in the upright position (horizonal)all I see is trim control no lever to hold the motor in the travel position.

Positons

There is a L pin under the engine and many holes to select the position of the engine from all the way down to all the way up! I guess that is what you are wondering about!

can not find it

When you say right under the motor do you mean like an inch or are you talking about the trim adjustment down on the shaft? What I'm looking for is a way to "lock" the motor in the horizonal position so it stays out of the water.

Trim adjustment

okay I guess I was refering to the trim adjustment pin! If I want the engine completely out of the water, I can lift it with the motor mount! I built and welded my own motor mount to allow for it!

Good move

Roger: Good choice. I have a 6h/4s Tohatsu, bought it new 3 years ago, and it starts and runs like a champ. Do the proper maintenance and you'll be happy as a camper.
