I have a new Honda 9.9 and it will not go up into the well, has anyone had this problem and what did you do? I dont want to put it to the side, so I guess I will have to fill the openning and mount on out side. any help out there.

The problem all C27s will face

or at least all of us who own Catalina 27s with an outboard. The powerheads on the new 4-stroke motors are too large to allow the motor to be tilted into the lazarette. Some owners are going the way of the external mount on the transom, some are doing surgery to make the opening in the transom taller by using a sawzall on the top of or bottom of the opening. Some are looking to buy a good used 2 stroke motor, some are buying smaller horsepower 4 strokes (with a smaller powerhead). The Honda has one of the largest powerheads. There is no good solution until the manufacturers develop smaller, lighter 4 strokes. Personally, I'm hoping my 2000 2-stroke Johnson 15 lasts a long, long time!

look at the Yamaha 8 HP

Both Honda and Yamaha are using their 15 HP blocks for their 9.9s so they are oversize now. It seems the Yamaha 8 HP is the closest to what used to be sold as a 9.9.

Filled in the Transom

I had the transom filled in and a power bracket installed; push one button and the motor goes up, push another and the motor goes down. You also inherit a good transom storage area. And finally, the transom doesn't look as dorky with the rectangular area open.

Betwixt the dock & deep blue

Gary, Wish I had good news for ya fella, but these guys are right. A friend of mine just went through this, bought a near-new outboard for the well on his Excalibur; wouldn't fit. He ended up drilling and bolted an 'easy-lift' bracket on the stern. He kept the well, so far, and wants to get another engine like the one that 'gave up the ghost' for a "spare" and the well motors do work better. I would sell that one and get one that fits, and the 2 cycles are: cheaper, lighter, and have more power for the given H. P. rating...

Hoarding Two strokes.

Small HP 2 strokes have disapeared for 2006. So run to your local dealer and buy any remaining models from last year. Give thanks to the conservationists of lakes and inland waterways.

Making it fit

My buddy and I were just horsing on his yesterday. He has cut the mounting slot in his transom deeper at the bottom and notched the opening higher at the top, and the Honda will now almost raise to the highest "click". He is considering cutting off part of the ramps on the top setting of the casting, so the cross bar will clear. Maddening.

I just drag the darn thing!

Man, I know your pain! I just drag my 9.9 merc behind in the lowered position. Yeah, it costs me about a knot, but I couldn't bear to slice up my cherry 27. The motor is locked facing forward and has electric start. If I could afford another motor, I'd do that, but since I don't race my boat, I live with loss of a knot.

Be aware of oil leakage!

I was told by another C27 owner that his 4 stroke leaks oil when there's heel to port and the motors up. He was exasperated by this as he'd hacked up his stern to make it tilt in. He didn't mention exactly who's outboard he had. I highly recommend checking the owners manual for the motor you have. Under something like "storage and transporting" it should mention what side of the motor NOT to lay down. Best of luck, we all feel your pain ....
