The regulator should not be affected by turning the key off while it is
running. The key should control power to the panel and to the fuel pump if
it is electric as mine is. Whether the key is on or not the alternator and
its regulator should function normally - at least on any diesel I have seen
or worked on. Now if you turn the main switch to "off" while running and the
charge current is going through it that is a different story and will
probably blow the diodes in the alternator.

Brian, by "main switch", do you mean the main battery switch? Thanks,

Yes, the main battery switch. If it is turned off while running the engine
the diodes in the alternator will often blow. But the ignition key being
turned off while running should have no ill effects.

Thanks Brian. One more question - an audible alarm goes off when the
key is shut off with engine running. Any idea what that alarm is trying
to alert me to? Thx, Trev

Not really, but one or all alarms (temp, oil pressure) is wired through the
ignition and by turning the key off it activates I would guess. I'd suggest
not turning the key off while running the engine but as I said there should
be no damage resulting if you do.
