Purchased a 1980 Hunter 30 and I have some things that need to be addressed . Chain plates , what is the best way to seal them ? Head tank or hoses seems to be leaking a little , repair or replace ? Any and all info about this boat will be very helpful . David Thomas

Replace sanitation hoses...

And it may be necessary to replace the toilet (marine toilets, unlike household toilets, have moving parts that wear out). But prob'ly not necessary to replace the tank unless it's either metal or cracked.

You'll find quite a bit of useful information in the discussions in the HeadMistress forum.

Hi David, congrats on your new boat. Hope you have many years of sailing ahead of you.

Regarding the chain plates. I'm assuming the shroud stays attach to a SS plate or bracket on the deck, then from there a SS rod that extends down to the hull where the rod plate is glassed into the hull. Are you talking about sealing the deck part from water intrusion? The proper way to seal the deck part is to re-bed. This means that the deck plate needs to be lifted high enough to clean both mating surfaces then seal with 3M4200 sealant or equivalent.

I suppose you could apply a sealant bead around the outside of the mating surfaces, which might work. I would consider this a temporary fix. If this plate is moving under the strain of the shroud stays you might consider consulting a rigger; it should not move.

David:

This is a common problem on the Hunter Cherubinis. You definitely need to raise the cover over the chain plate. There is also a chance that you may be getting water intrusion into the deck. Quite often there will be signs of water into the bulkhead. If this is the case, you may want to completely remove the chain plate and seal the area between the deck and the hull liner.

Once you have that taken care of you can seal the area around the chain plate and replace the cover. Be sure to caulk the cover too.

Great boat, they just have a couple of weak points and this is one of them.

Welcome aboaard Dave,
being a little biased, I might say the the cherubini boats are good solid boats. I have the 1979 H-30 and had her for maybe 5 yrs now. She has never had a blister since ive owned her. The decks are good and solid and she will take alot more weather than I can for sure. Regarding the chain plates, Make sure that there are no signs of soft spots around them and check below wherre they attach to the boat in the salon. Reseal if needed with 5400 or something similar.

Enjoy your new boat and sail safe. I might also recommend a safe boating course from the power squadron or Aauxiliary as they are usually free of charge and good info to know. Some insurance CO's offfer discounts with same.

Hi guys, just wondering how these threads get so convoluted? The original was posted last September. Peggy was the only one who replied. How did we all miss it? Well you guys were sailing but I was at home.

Then "calieigh" picks up on it but he doesn't mention Hunter. I did a search to see if the originator, "fom1038", ever came back or ever posted anything else and nada. Strange, where did he go with that "new" H30?
