I'm Currently doing research on adding a real mattress to our 380's rear cabin. I remember last year a 376 owner who had just purchased one and was thrilled, but I can't remember who or where, and I can't find it in the archives. I'm looking for the company name and apporx. cost. Thanks in Advance Bob Knott H380

Doing Reserach Too

Bob, We are still looking at replacing the aft mattress in our 376. Closest company to me (in northern Virginia) so far in our research ...is Palmer Mattress in Philadelphia. Checked out companies in Georgia and California but the freight was almost as much as the mattress estimate. We are going to send a template to Palmer and then work on an estimate...they make box spring mattresses in various thicknesses and can hinge them as you want. Looks like at least $850 to start. You can talk to Greg Palmer by phone (877) 854-8874 or via email at boatmattress@yahoo.com I'll update you later when I get an estimate.

Mattresses

Hi Bob, Happy new year! I found another company with a website that I picked up from the Island Packet website. It's URL is www.yourdesignmattress.com . I hope this helps, but I don't think this will be cheap no matter how you cut it. But then how much is a good night's sleep worth. Just to make you feel better, it 40 degrees out and dropping with 15-20 kts of wind and spitting rain. Talk to you soon. Paul Bednarzyk S/V Knot Again

Handcraft makes a great product

We purchased a custom Handcraft mattress for our 29.5 a couple of years ago. A little pricey but well worth it for great sleeping. Also, a good company to work with - they deliver what and when they promise.

Unlimited $$$, go with HMC; otherwise...

After 1 year with the factory foam cushions (the boat was new), we wanted something comfortable. The problem with the factory cushions is that the foam compresses and takes a 'set' so you end up sleeping in a 'hole'. We looked at HMC. Outrageous price. Probably great quality, but not a good buy in my book. I asked them for a quote on just replacement hi resiliency foam, and they gave me a equally ludicrous quote. Obviously they don't want that type of business. I ended up purchasing replacement foam that has excellent support characteristics from Foam Sweet Foam. They are on the 'net and easy to find. Contact me and I will look up the exact type of foam that we used. They will ship you samples before you order the full size pieces. I spent 2 hours one evening cutting the new 4" thick foam with a $10 electric knife and inserting the foam nto the existing cushion covers. I used the old foam as a pattern. The fit was perfect, the comfort is wonderful, and the total cost for the aft cabin was about $350. This was 25% of what HMC wanted for their mattress, and this foam has a 15 year guarantee. The HMC mattress was 6" thick and would have meant that we would have lost 2" in overhead clearance as well as having to modify the backrest in our 40.5 that the factory cushions slip underneath. We are on our boat every weekend and for several weeks during the summer. We are not live-aboards. If we were, perhaps a $1500 mattress could be justified. After all, it's only 2-3 times what a great quality home mattress would cost!

Inaccurate info. from response title: Unlimited $$

Rich Stidgers response to "new mattress" is frought with inaccuracies. As the sales Mgr. at HMC, I was brought to this web site forum from a potential customer. We are in the business of custom manufacturing innerspring and Latex Mattresses for boats as upgrades from upholstered polyurethane foam cushioning. The "ludicrous" price quote Mr. Stidgers refers to baffles me. On occasion, we receive a request for High Resiliency Poly-Foam. In the case of the Hunter 376, a 4" Poly-Foam mattress cut to shape and covered with a quilted Damsk cover top side and vinyl bottom runs $450.00 ($10.00 electric knife not necessary). Our innerspring product line is higher priced than home beds for the obvious reasons of odd sizes and shapes as well as the marinization features we employ. Most of our customers are not in fact live-aboards, but rather people who want to be as comfortable on their boat as at home. HMC counts many Hunter owners as satisfied, well rested customers!

multiple layers of foam, that's the key

We replaced our foam mattresses with foam mattresses. The real key is to have several layers of foam of varying densities. Some time before we replaced ours (5 years ago) there was an article in one of the sailing rags about doing it, they recommended 3 layers of different density, or firmness, of foam. We called our local sailmaker. He'd made us great sails so we asked who could make the mattress. Turns out he'd made a number of them and we let him make ours. He brought samples of foam, we stacked them up to try them out. We ended up selecting 2 layers, soft on top, firm below. He made up the 3 pieces for the v-berth at a cost of about $500, and we've been quite happy with them. They are as comfortable as any mattress I've slept on, regardless of cost. It was Me!

Bob, I wrote the article about the mattress I had made from The Original Mattress Factory here in Marietta Georgia, just North of Atlanta. There number is 770-612-8117. I don't know if they still have the template I made for the aft berth or not but it should be worth checking. We are still enjoying ours and think is't one of our better investments on the boat. I think the cost was about $300.00 well worth it we think. If you have a custom factory near you, you might think about making a template and taking it to them. It's not that hard to do. If not, give them a call. I think the man I delt with is named Mike. Good luck, it made a world of difference in our sleeping comfort.
