I read in the paper today that a new marina is opening in Tampa Bay. Slip rents are,.. get this...$800 to $2000 a month. Who are these people that pay that kind of money? The Tampa newspaper stated that the marina opens next month but is already 30% full. Are you seeing this kind of high end marinas in your area? Maybe in Los Angeles but,.. lets be real, who can afford that? Jack

Something You Need To Know.......

Jack, there are an unbelieveable number of very wealthy people in this country and many of them were born here. PS: I'm not one of them....

Texas Gulf Coast is still fairly reasonable

The Houston/Clear Lake area is still reasonable. You can find slips that rent by boat length and by the slip length. I have a 30' s/v and pay $125.00 a month at Watergate Yachting Center. Other marinas range from between $3.50 and $7.00 a foot. I have been told that the Clear Lake area is the third or forth largest yachting center in the Nation.

If we didnt live aboard....

After putting an Ins. Claim in and getting my boat totalled in Katrina, we could not afford the new Ins. Rates and the slip fees if we did not live aboard. Everything is relative, after living aboard in Biloxi, Ms. and Slidell, La., I thought TX was high. I just got an education on Florida slip fees when i purchased my new-to-me boat there. Pleasure boating may become a thing of the past for the average working slob.

800-2000 per month keeps

out the rif-raf. 150-250 per month and everybody would want a slip. So you raise the price until you have 95 per cent occupancy. That is the way the market works.

Pensacola getting Pricey

I just got my old slip back at Seville Harbour/Pitt Slip. Before Ivan, (this was Pensacola's version of Katrina; we are still recovering after almost two years) prices were in the $9 a foot range, now anywhere from $10-$12 a foot.

I shopped around looking for cheap! Yes, I found $105 easy to come by *pop; I missed on a private bulkhead at $750 for the season :{; am on the Islip wait list at $45 per foot(Lord knows when THAT'll come in!; and I found a guy with 2 marinas in Bay Shore and Islip who wanted $1750 for the season, which is what I took. If you want his contact info, let me know. BTW, Jeremy (uploadJoe) is also with him. s/v Nausicaa chirving@hotmail.com

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
New Docks at my Marina

My Marina just built over 100 new slips in Colonial Beach. They are $1500 a year. I have my Catalina 30 in one of the slips and they are nice....but more expensive than I wanted to pay. Next door the slips are $800 a year. THey aren't as nice but that is a lot cheaper than what I pay. My slip is 40 feet by 18 feet. It has over 6 foot of depth at low tide. Water and Electric are being added to every slip. Brand new dock. Is $1500 a bad price in the Chesapeake Bay/Potomac River area?

Chris,

I have a slip at Bay Shore Marina, at less than 40 a foot, thats right less than 40 so keep checking with the town about your status on that wait list, you have a better chance with a boat in the 22 to 26 range as people with larger boats are just not giving up there boats and with gas price's maybe the power boat will say the heck with this and give up his slip. It was me that told you about a Newsday ad in Islip and did it work out?

up here on the third coast

Slips for my Hunter 30 range from 1200 to 2300 per season {April 15 to Oct.15}. mooring bouys are 500. for the season. I cringe when i hear the prices along the oceans near the large cities. Viva fresh water!!! Pray for Wind, Lugeman

Jack, you don't say

what lengths those rates are for but it may not be that far out of line for a full service marina in this area. We're paying nearly $1000/mo. for 40' here at Twin Dolphin in Bradenton. Hey, it's how we keep out the undesireables. They were actually going to let people in here whose yachts didn't have a full time crew. Sheesh, the nerve... :)

get real

My brother went to a retirement party Friday. The guy was a regular worker in his road construction company. My bro, the CPA/Comptroller, tell me the guy walked away with about 3 million in savings from buying stock over 30 years, investing inthe 401k, and having the company grow. I won't see this unless I win the lottery, but a lot of people have a lot of money, and so this amount isn't unreasonable, given it keeps the rich in and the regulars out. It says "I belong"!

Any of you liveaboard?

Our marina charges 5.75 per foot. Then there is the 30.00 a month liveaboard fee (showers, trash, etc.) and electric. There are about 150 people on the waiting list, and are beating the doors down to get in here. We are about the least expensive marina in the area. The owner is a boater also so I have to give him credit, he understands that everyone that owns a boat isn't a yachtie. Fair Winds Cap'n Dave

Right RAD, and thanks again for the tip on the ad. I had written his # down already to call him, I had seen a sign on the marina, but your tip prompted me to call him first. He is a very pleasant old gent and his rates are not too high (!). I'm on the list for Bay Shore, Maple Ave and West Islip at beach Rd.. The rates wre UNDER$40??? Wow. Someone told me that 45 was tghis year's rate. That's great! I hope I'll get in for next year as I suspect the "5-6 year wait" is the town's way of discouraging folks. email me at chirving@hotmail.com s/v Nausicaa

Writing on the Wall

I live in the Tampa Bay Area also. Condo Developers are buying up all the marina's and boat yards. They are making condo's and Dockominums with these marinas. These Developers have already destroyed other parts of the country and Florida. Now they are destroying our access to the bays and waters of Florida. The reason is they can't get permits to build their own marinas. Wait until one of these boats need repairs. There are very few marina (Boat Yards) in the Tampa Bay Area. I need my bottom painted on my sailboat. In six months of looking, I have only found two marinas that can do it. The Tampa Bay Area is in a serious crisis and very few people know it. You need to write your public officials. I hear Palm Beach County has made an effort. They have made laws to protect marinas from Condo Developers.
