New Mainsail

I'm considering a new Main and two of the quotes I got back were for
a loose footed sail. My question is, does anyone have any experience
with that type of sail vs the traditional boltrope/track sail? Both
sail lofts said hey would make it either way, so maybe time has
passed me by, and this is the new way?

Hans: I too need a new main. Can you share with us the information you get
from the sailmakers? Obviously I'm interested in cost, but cloth weight,
reef points, reinforcements, batten configuration (full or partial), and
anything else would be of interest as well. I'm looking forward to hearing
of others' experiences with loose footed mains. Hans, if you think time has
passed you by, I still have a sliding gooseneck with downhaul, while I think
most have switched to fixed goosenecks with Cunningham control by now. Maybe
it's time to update (even small stylish eyeglasses!) Bill Bach V1071

Just a "hi" to you Bill. Your old engine is still in my garage. My original
is operating effectively for now. Like you I have other priorities and I am
continually upgrading bits and pieces...Will you have your VEGA in the water
this summer?

Cheers

Hi,
now that the boat is ashore and laid up for the winter I\'d like something to
look at- and probably look forward to...:)

Anybody know where I could order an Albin Vega half-model to put on my
office wall? (I\'d just need the half-model itself and can make the "plank"
behind it myself) Thanks in advance, best regards from Holland,

Hielke

If there are any models (half or full) available it would make a wonderful Christmas present, so I, too, am interested.

Thanks, Hielke, for the idea!

Ditto here, I've been looking around without success but would love to know
who makes Vega half models.

One of the people on the Albin Cruisers List did a half hull model of an
Albin 27 Cruiser. I'll send out a query to the list to see if they would
be interested in doing a Vega half hull.

Brian- Hello. Yes, we launched last spring after a long refit and have spent
the summer sailing. Hope to see you at the reunion in Friday Harbor next
summer. Bill V1071

Dear Hielke,
I'm looking forward to the reactions because I'm interested in having "something
to look at" on my office wall too, preferably objects which have todo with or
are Vega's.
Any suggestions (websites, addresses) always welcome.

Hi Bill, I got two quotes, one from Doyle and the other from Airforce Sails
(affiliated with Sailnet).
The Doyle quote is for $1032, plus tax:
DuraSail 2+2, 6.46 oz Dacron, 166 sq ft (due to sail shape/construction), 4
Battens, 2 full length, 2 Reefs, Luff Slides, Loose Foot, Moderate Girth, and
Sail Bag.
Optional items: Logo - $19, Sail Numbers - $38, Shelf Foot - $38 (if you dont
like a loose footed sail).

Airforce Sails quote is for $991, no tax or shipping charges:
6.53 oz Dacron, 157 sq ft, 4 Battens, 2 full length, 2 extended length
tapered (they say 50% long), 1 Deep Reef, S.S. Corner Rings. Logo, Numbers
and Shelf Foot are similar in price (slightly higher, couple of bucks).

I still have not heard any good reasons to go with a loose footed sail. You
can check the Doyle web site at www.doylesails.com and request a quote, and
the loft nearest you will rspond. Airforce Sails are at www.sailnet.com, and
you will get a quote on the spot, it's a really cool site, where you can
change inputs and get different quotes. Good luck, and Im still looking for
comment on loose footed sails.
I'm leaning toward the Doyle sail with a shelf foot.

Hi,
I bought a new Main this year from Neil Pride. It is a conventional
4 batten with 6.5 oz, One set of reef points for deep reef. I still
use the roller reefing system for small reefs. Logo and sail
numbers,sail bag approx $1050.

Thanks, Hans and Jim, for the replies on mains. I'm going to get quotes from
North and Banks, both have local lofts, and will let you all know what I come
up with. Also, has anyone in the group gone to a rigid boom vang? If so,
what are your thoughts? Thanks. Bill Bach V 1071

Dear all,
I just came across an advertisement of "Crusader Sails Sailmakers" in the
English magazine "SAILING TODAY". They (Crusader Sails) are UK based and
they sell the standard Vega mainsails, roller reefing genoas and tri-radial
spinnakers. They also seem to make individually designed sails and they
claim to have the best prices.
I haven't ordered anything with them so far but as I'm considering todo so
in the near future (roller reefing genoas) I'm looking now for someone who
has.
Their website is www.crusadersails.co.uk and their e-mail
sails@... , in English and several other languages.
Hope I've been of some help to you.
Greetings,

Hi everybody who is interested in de Vega half-model,

Today I made a phone call to the man who made a lot of half-models for the Dutch Vega-sailors. He still has the moulds and is willing to make more if there are enough orders.
We have the model ourselves and it is, fixed on a plank, hanging on the wall of our study.
It is white and the measures are: length 28 cm., height 10 cm., depth 6 cm. It looks fine!
Maybe it is a good idea to order it without plank because of the forwarding-charges.

The name of this man is Henk Harting and he lives in the South of Holland. He speaks and writes English. His e-mail address is:

henkharting@...

He is waiting for your e-mail.

Hi Hans, Have you checked out SailsEast.com for a quote on a new main.
They had the best prices when I replaced my main a few years ago.
Might want to check them out. They service worldwide. Walt.

Dear Yvonne,

Thank you for the information, you're always on the lookout for information and
I apreciate this very much.
Where exactly is Henk located?
You wrote "the south" so this can't be very far from the Belgian border. I'm
considering buying the model with plank, so maybe I might be able to go and
fetch it at his place.
