New London-New York

I've been sailing my Cal 33, from Boston-Cape Cod-Newport area. The furthest I've ventured south has been New London Connecticut. Next year I'd like to go to New York City, maybe a loop around the statue of liberty, has anyone been? Any advice? I'm equipped with radar, gps, and have good charts. I drive a snow plow truck and made some extra cash yesterday, so I'd like to live like a big shot and stay at a nice marina near the city for a day or two.

New London to New York

William, You'll find NYC to be an interesting and fun place to sail. With everything you have on your boat it will be an easy trip. Before you come down make sure you check the tides coming down the East River. They get strong especially thru Hell's Gate. The Eldridge tide book will give you some good information on when to transit the river. With a good tide you can make it from the Throggs Neck Bridge to the Battery at the lower end of Manhatten in about 1:10. Also check with the USCG about any restrictions, we had a lot of them last summer. We keep our boat at Liberty Landing Marina in Jersey City. Right across from Manhatten. There is a ferry service for $5 that will drop you off if you want to go into the city. The Marina is a little expensive but had great dock and is calm with no wakes. It's the only one to stay at where you can get a decent nights sleep and not have your boat get beat up from the ferry wakes. View from the Marina is really great in the evening when the sun goes down and reflects off all the buildings.

Jump-off spots

Catching the tide at Hell Gate is imperative, so it is probably a good idea to overnight, when you're heading in, at either Manhasset Bay or at City Island. That puts you close enough to set out before the tide turns (how much before depends upon your boat's speed capabilities) and get to Hell Gate at just the right time. You will likely have company, in the form of TUG & BARGE TRAFFIC. Things can get quite cozy. In the East River we had a tug & unloaded barge cruise past us about two boatlengths off our side. Check with the Coast Gaurd about reporting requirements & float plans. If you go with another boat, you can take each other's picture in front of the Statue of Liberty (not too close, all the same...)

Hell Gate

William, I have traveled from the Hudson River to the Sound 5 times over the last 5 years. It is not too hard but yes, you need to be careful. If you wish to compare notes, send me an Email and I will share my plan on getting thr both ways. John s/v Lady K jsail320@cox.net

a trip that must be experienced!

I once made that trip on a delivery from Annapolis to New London. We managed to hit the tide just right, and past by Lady Liberty just at sunset. There are a lot of great sights to see, BUT make absolutely sure someone is watching traffic and nothing else! There is a lot of tug/barge trafic on the East river!!!!!!!! We almost got runover a couple of times while mesmorized by the sights. Also, be sure to check your fuel level before starting out. It's a long stretch, longer than we estimated and almost ran out of fuel midway.

The picture is...

the "living like a big shot" part of the post. I assumed this was what he expected to happen when he got there and is looking for advice to ensure a good time. Mark PS My advice is to get rid of the hat.

My mistake

He's not wearing a hat. Since that is the case, I have NO idea how to make this happen. Mark

My dream crew

Sorry folks, I used a photo from my visit to lost wages, nevada. Only to grab some attention, I couldn't afford to keep my boat crewed more than an hour with these professionals. I do appreciate the advice, though. I'm probably making the trip to New York sometime in late July.

Equipment

Too bad that is the limit of your equipment!!! No wonder you have to use a picture from Las Vegas and the Mustang Ranch to entice a response from this forum. Spring weather and sailing time for all can't come soon enough. I'm getting really tired of all these bogus postings. We need a link to send these people over to the CWBB!!!
