Based on the advice from a rigging inspection and the fact they looked really bad I have invested in new lifelines. I went with the white coated again and was wondering what if anything you might apply to the coating to protect it and keep it looking new. Any thoughts, Thanks Don

While nothing is better than new lifelines, I have learned that old, yellowed, stained lifelines can be brought back to sparkling white by wiping them with a rag soaked in Acetone. It basically dissolves a thin layer of the vinyl off, removing the stains and yellowing. Done lightly, the stained outer layer just comes off onto the rag and leaves the lines looking sparkling white!

What do you use for knots, ( heaven forbid ) or splices to connect things up with the spectra. I like the idea of the spectra, but wonder about the appearance of the connections.

I opened 3/4 inch polypropylene three strand
and wrapped that around the 7/32 1-19 former shrouds that I used as life lines. I have parceled and worned that and am in the process of serving it with # 60 nylon seine twine. You don't mind getting a death grip on a line as big as a broom handle.

I did the same thing
Steph did in Post #3 below: gently and carefully wipe old white coated lifelines with acetone. Comes out looking very good. When I get around to replacing them in a few years, I plan to go with uncoated wire as it's cheaper and will allow a greater diameter which should add up to increased strength and safety.

Warren, I agree with
the non-coated wire idea, and have used acetone to clean mine (what a pain). However, the weakest link in the lifeline system are the stanchions, so going up a notch in size is only gonna cost you mroe $$ for perhaps no real "strength" benefit. Think it through and perhaps save some $$ next year.

Has anyone seen the add in the March/April Good Old Boat on page 67? It is for making your own life lines, from Suncor. It looks interesting and it seems you do not need any special tools to make it with. Just a question Dale
