Hello everyone,
I am the wife of a man-of-the-sea. He has been working at a Marina in Virginia for the last 40 years with his father. His dad is 90 and going downhill rapidly. I have been trying to get him away from here for the last almost 7 years. Because of legal issues with family about the Marina, he is now ready to go. Problem is...we need help as to where to go and all aspects included. My husband has been a rigger since 1970. He has been running an 80 slip marina (covered and open) since then also. If anyone has any ideas, please reply. He knows that I am writing this. His e-mail is cptskip@yahoo.com All replies welcome.
Thank you

Your post is............rather strange. Your having legal problems at a business you've worked at for 40 years ? You're looking for job leads because you're ready to bail now that the owner is going to die and you want some help finding a new place to hang your hat?
Am I the only one that's confused here ? I don't get it ! Something doesnt sound right with your story. Ill need more to go on. Can you elaborate ?

Given the size of your boat, I would recommend that you head down the ICW and get to Florida and then cross the Gulf Stream to the Bahamas. That is well within the capabilities of your boat and some of the most beautiful sailing that you'll find within a reasonable distance.

The other choice would be to head north to New England and spend some time in my neck of the woods before heading to Maine.

Just hazarding a guess...the marina may have to be sold in order to cover the estate tax. We had to sell a lot of my grandparents assets to pay the tax when they passed in order to keep the buisness.

Mountains and deserts!!! I love the sea and sailing but out in the four corners region is awfully nice. We hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and have hiked in Zion National park several times. You might want to explore the drier parts of the USA for a while. sea level is fine but the view from Pike's peak is awesome.

I heard something the other day about the estate tax being put on hold for the time being. I am sure someone else could elaborate.

Check with an estate attorney. My dad has quite a few real estate holdings that were put into a living trust. It is a way to avoid the cost of probate. The inheritance laws that were repealed this year will be reinstated if congress does not vote to continue them. From what I understand this exempts $1,000,000 from being taxed. If not continued it will go right back to the old schedule at 55%.

The "Death Tax" is no longer in force, but only for tax year 2010. This is due to a law passed a couple of years ago that only passed on the condition that it "Sunset" at the end of the year. If the Republicans hadn't lost soo many seats in both houses of congress, they planned on extending it. The regulation after 2010, under current law, taxes estates that have assets in excess of $1mil (I think that's the threshold amount). Less than the threshhold and there is NO tax. The Pols claim that the tax will affect less than 10,000 estates in America. Sorry to hear that you and Skip fall into that category. Your situation (if the issue is taxes) was the reason the conservatives wanted a permanent repeal.
Such is life and politics.

I should have read the "Reply" first. Never mind!
