New Jersey to Miami

Some of you may think that I've hit the lottery, others may be annoyed at another yankee invading the south, but it seems that my company is being nice enough to transfer me from New Jersey to Miami. I'll be trading the Raritan Bay for the Biscayne Bay. Year round sailing... Cool! My concern though is getting my H33 form New Jersey to Miami. Any thoughts on what may be the best way to go? Trucking or sailing it down. I'm leaning towards hiring a skipper and sailing. Has anyone had any experience with trucking? Which would be most cost effective, and under best case circumstances, how long would a sail take? I'm thinking of going along with the skipper for the experience. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. John.

NJ -Miami

I had my 34 trucked from Annapolis to Lake erie years ago by ABC. Everything went OK, but the mast had to be stripped of all rigging including the spreaders. Also the trucker apparentkly stopped for a few days to visit his girlfriend, which was an inconvenience at the receiving end. The boat arrived in good shape I crewed (three of us) in bringing a 54 Hunter from Miami to the upper Chesapeake a couple of years ago. The owner had things pretty well planned out and other than some serious mechanical problems the trip was uneventful. We went offshore from Miami to Cape Fear, then took the intracoastal the rest of the way. To estimate the time, I would figure about 125 miles a day offshore and about 60 miles a day in the "ditch". The Intracoastal is nice for the first few days, but it becomes (in my opinion) a lot of LONG days of motoring.

Leave The Boat in Jersey........

that way you can go visit it on weekends. We don't need no more Yanks down here. Wait a minute...you said Miami, Biscayne Bay...that would be okay, bring the boat on down with you. All kidding aside..welcome to South Florida. You're going to like it here, and inspite of my tongue in cheek start to this post we welcome all sailors to our little piece of paradise. Depending on the time you have, sailing down would be the most fun, and hiring a skipper would not be a bad way to go. If your planning on docking the boat in Biscayne Bay I would suggest that you locate a suitable slip or dock BEFORE you bring the boat down. Dockage is a premimum in Miami and all city owed marina's are, shall we say pricey. Biscayne Bay, like much of the water in South Florida is skinney. Shoal draft boats under 5' draft are referred as a deeper draft will limit not only your sailing area but your docking area as well. And with Dade County being 85% hispanic there is no BEER, its called Cerveza, and thank you is Muchos Gracias, so you will, no doubt, become bi-linguel in time. Dockage is a little easier up around Ft. Lauderdale and the going rate is around $10.00 foot per month. You can rent dockage behind private homes and they are plentiful. Plus we still have Beer in Broward County. Let me know if you need any more information and good luck in your relocation. Sincerely, Darrel Tartan 33, Aegis Lighthouse point, Florida

Not there yet.

Thanks for the tips Darrel. We have'nt gotten there yet. We're still trying to figure out where to live down there. I'll be working around North Miami and would like to be in an area reasonably close by that has decent schools for my kids. I'll probably keep the boat up here for the winter while I get everything lined up down there.

Take the Ditch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You hace to run the ICW! That is the experince of a lifetime. I am assuming you have a Hunter 33, thats a great boat for heading down the ditch late summer. Remember, you can stop anywhere along the way and haul it down if you wish from there. You can set up transport in a matter of days and can be very involved in saving some costs in the decommissioning (prep your own mast for example). Naturally, the farther south you go the less expensive it is to ship. Come on.....sail it down. You will never forget the experience. Regards Bob Breezin II Cat 30

You will like it

Hey John, I'm from New Jersey, still have a house there, but I sail inthe Gulf off of Biloxi, Mississippi and have been to Miami many times. Anybody who likes boats should love Miami and Ft. Lauderdale. Believe me, there are more New York and New Jersey accents in South Florida than anyplace other than Northeast & MId-Atlantic states. ajp

I would prefer the Ditch, But...

if you need to truck..... I spoke tio the driver who delivered my boat to Ohio last year, and he was desperatly seeking a load to haul back to Florida. he was going to drive to Michigan to get a load if he had to. So, see when your closest Hunter (or any) dealer is expecting a delivery, and maybe you can get a good deal on a trip to Florida if the driver has a ready made backhaul already available. Good luck...... Jeff
