I just bought a 1981 hunter 37 as a restoration project. This is the first large boat I have owned and restored. I am looking for any help or advice I can get on this boat. Thanks in advance.

Bring lots of TIME, or CASH, to the project. Even better if you can bring BOTH.

You'll find that forum participants are eager to respond with information and advice. Good to have a new member.

However, there are hundreds of items/systems on these (or any) sailboat. And we don't know what actual condition your boat is in and what needs attention. So as you start to delve into your restoration, in order to get useful responses, I suspect you'll need to be a little more specific than "any help or advice" ...

Well as of right now I know I need some minor deck repair. I need top and bottom paint and im am going to replace and upgrade all the navi systems and running rigging. The standing rigging is still good. I am also replacing the motor and the appliances in the galley. As far as the rest of the electrical work goes I havent been able to get that far into it yet.

Get a survey, budget and prioritize your projects. You
will go over budget and get behind schedule but at least you will be working on the right stuff. Welcome to the forum

Hi:

I highly recommend the publication in the below link. The first section "Inspecting the Aging Sailboat" is essentially a step-by-step DIY survey instruction tutorial. Following it will give you a pretty good assessment of your restoration requirements. I used it prior to my pre-survey inpection of my current, first and only Cherubini Hunter. Then the formal survey identified only a couple of other items. The rest of the book tells you how to fix just about everything on a sailboat, with the exception of spars and standing and running rigging. It really is a must-have for any DIY type owner of an older boat.

Lots of good advice above. My first priority was the safety items:

The keel that keeps you from falling over - keel bolts
The stuff that keeps the mast up - standing rigging
The steering system and rudder.
Everything that keeps water out - stuffing box, through hulls, hoses (e.g. raw water)
Anything that can start a fire or blow you up - wiring, propane, fuel
Anything that can electrocute you - 110 volt hook up
Things that affect engine reliability - hoses, belts, fuel, filters, starting battery
Check/install fire, carbon monoxide and maybe propane detectors
Required safety equipment

Thanks ill keep all that in mind. I believe the keel is good and the standing riggine and mast are good. The rudder may need some minor repair. And I will be sure to check the rest of the electrical and the hoses and all of that the next chance I get to work on her.

Thanks Bill. Where could I find a surveyor and about how much would that cost?
Can't help you with a name in SC. Ask around your boatyard or sailing club for references, anyone can call themselves a surveyor. Again, I don't know about SC, but here in Florida you can buy a boat without a survey, but you cannot get insurance without a survey,

Take some time to look at all the "Owner Modifications" link. There are lots of ideas that may be incorporated into any project you tackle. Mathurin did deck repair, & has extra links to show all that is involved. As if I do not have enough to do, these guys keep giving more ideas, and the courage to try some projects I would not have thought to try. It is a great journey. TC
