You are right to think 30 to 40 hp Rainer. I've watched a lot of diesel projects here over the years. Everyone has a favorite motor. But if you buy new they all end up being about the same total cost. Be sure to call Torresen and Mack Boring about rebuilts.

Emil, if you have the "door" in your 1981 I think it was added by a PO. Yours is the first '81 that I have heard has that opening in the v-berth. According to the comparison spreadsheet it was 1983 before that became standard. Could we have it wrong?

Ed - I also have an opening in the aft cabin - looked just about big enough to crawl through. Don't know if the PO added it, but based on a recent conversation with him about mods he made, I don't think so. So if I have Hull #11, I'm guessing they were standard issue from the start.

Definitely not standard before at least 1981. And I think 1983. Too many times I have had guys wonder how we were working on the hot water heater or stuffing box. I was one of those guys, I had to do the mod on my '79. Can't tell you how many times I have explained how to cut out that opening.

My 81 came to me with the quarter berth access door. Looks like original Hunter fittings, trim etc. but perhaps it could have been a PO mod.

The trim work is there in all the boats. There are only three cuts. The two vertical cuts are behind teak trim. Then a cut along the bottom between the two vertical cuts. My mod looks exactly like the factory version. Does your door have the round screw out panel at the aft end like mine. I wonder what they thought you could do through that eight inch hole? Did the newer boats with the factory door have that round access?

I think you are in the correct ball park for HP in a new motor. I think the rule of thumb is 1 HP per 500 lbs. (ie: 17,000 lb vessel would like to see a 34 hp engine). The YM engine like Ed S. seems to move the vessel along at hull speed. If you are in an area where there are stong currents a little more may help.

Ed - was at the marina yesterday and you're right - the access hole I saw was definitely a PO mod.
