I bought a 84 hunter 27 .It has alot of issues leaking ports/ hatches, soft compression post, rotten wood + alot of little things.
Yall are probably thinking this guy is nuts an mabe i am. But i like fixing things and love woodwork an have the fever. I bought the boat for what the keel would bring salvage.
The mast i have is of another boat its about the same hight as what came on the hunter ill need pro help with that and the running rigging maybe someone here can help or knows someone in eastern North Carolina that can.

Merry Chrismas and Happy new year

Had my boat at Sailcraft in Oriental for a month. Very knowledgeable and friendly crew there. But much less expensive to find some experienced friends or acquaintances. It is not that difficult to install new basic standing rigging. A furler could make it a little more difficult. Having it trailerable helps a lot. You can drag it to have it worked on and not have to pay yard fees for leaving it.

Hey Lee, Welcome to Hunter owners. I also have an '84 Hunter 27 and live near Wilmington, NC. Bought it 6 years ago in Lil Washington at McCatters - they have been ok with service - good on sails; not so good mechanical. I've done most of my own work -repowered from 10hp to 15 hp; replaced port window only; cut and install new soles; new running rigging; bottom paint and new thru hulls (including transducer); and many smaller projectt. Just ordered new foreward hatch and plan to install in next few weeks. Also planning to have prof climb mast to replace wind direction vane and masthead light. Best sailing areas are in Pamlico region. Let me know if I can assist you. Tony

Welcome, Lee

10 years with our '77 h27 have shown us that this is a straightforward boat to work on. And it is simply a great cruising design for one or two. (We've sailed a week with four - but you need to be really good friends/family!)

The archives on this site have lot's of good reading for you.

My only suggestion for now is that you get the mast step for the mast you are planning to use. That's the hardware that holds the foot of the mast on the deck. Since you have a non-standard mast, the step on your boat will probably not fit the mast you have.

Welcome aboard!

I owned a 78 hunter 27 for about 9 years. It was a great boat .If you are handy and like working on boats it will be fun. I also had issues with the compresstion post and main rib.I replaced the 2 2x4's that made up the rib with a sealed plywood beam.It didn't cost to much in material
,but it did in time.

I brought a 81 Hunter and love it. Was so new to sailing you could smell the platic on me. But this boat loves to be cherished, worked on, and talked to. With that in mind, dont talk trash about her, at least while you are on her. And even when you are not one her, anything said about her should be at a whisper. :)

Welcome to the Club.
