Hunter 25 Forked River, New Jersey
Hello Everyone, Has anyone sailed the new Hunter 25? I am interested in purchasing a new one, but it is too cold in NJ for a proper test sail for at least another 6 weeks. My concern is the side slippage with the long, shallow keel. Also, I am concerned about trailering at 4650 lbs with my 4-Runner. With a little loading , I would be at the max of 5000 lbs. I don't intend to trailer very often, but want the option anyway. My second choice is a Hunter 260, but haven't sailed either boats. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Barry

Regardless of the boat you buy this info on trailering a sailboat may help. Go to: http://kobernus.com/hunter260/travel/travel.html

For what it's worth

I own a 1994 Hunter 26, very similar to the Hunter 260 and a fair bit lighter than the new Hunter 25. I tow it about twice a year with a Jeep Liberty, about 250 miles from my home to my slip. The Jeep is rated to tow 5000 lb. and I believe the boat is about 4500 with the trailer and whatever junk is placed in the boat or the Jeep on top of that. Towing is a bit of a chore, and the boat is not towed over 60 mph, or it tends to sway. and then it gets scary. that said, up to about 59 mph the Jeep may work hard, but it tows the boat quite well. I have to believe the new 25 is closer to 5500 on the trailer, so the tow vehicle would work harder. The 4 runner probably would be OK if you are gentle with it, but probably would burn up quickly if you try to keep up with 70 mph traffic. I have seen that some people believe that a vehicle rated for 5000 lb should be able to go 90 mph up the side of a montain with 5000 behind it, and others believe that if they can reasonably get their 5000 lb load to their destination at a lower speed they are happy. Which catagory do you fall into?

Trailering H26

Barry; Most people underestimate the actual weights. My H260 is 5200 lbs before adding a couple hundred lbs of "stuff". Run the trailer/boat and tow vehicle across a certified scale before making a final decision. Check your vehicle manual to get your GVWR, GTWR, and GCWR. Hunter 26 Ras Al Khaimah - United Arab Emirates
Stayed under 50 mph

Hi Barry, I just towed my Legend 26 a 100 mile plus from Dubai to Ras Al Khaimah, near the Omani border. I have a 4x4 Galloper (Pajero), it towed well but I sensed some forward/backward rocking once up to 50+ so I stayed below 50mph. Morris

capable 4runner

I haven't sailed the new 25, I'm writing concerning your 4runner. If you have the v6 model you shouldn't have any problem pulling the new hunter 25. Toyota conservatively rates their vehicles, so you can expect to pull a bit more than they are rated. For occasional towing you should be ok. If you'll notice on Huntermarine.com, the pictures for the new Hunter 25 show a Chevrolet Blazer pulling the boat. This vehicle has no more ability than your 4runner. Good luck.
