The new Hunter 25 will be an exciting boat in many ways. First to update. Hunter Marine is a division of Luhrs Group. The new 25 is being built at one of the other factories and I have found their quality is pretty good and my hats off to them. It will be some time before we see a boat per day as Hunter wants this to be a good boat. The rudder was delayed as they saw a defect and that should be finished shortly. There is a temporary mast carrier but will be replaced. Starting with the later models, the head will have a door versus the privacy curtain. You can get the wheel steering option. You can add controls for gear and throttle for the engine on the wheel steering but Hunter is still considering this. However, this is what I would do. I would use the Tohatsu or Nissan (same engine) 9.8 four stroke long shaft fisherman style(tiller style) with electric start. I would purchase the SRC cable kit for the engine, controls from Lemar, modify the gaurd rail or buy one that Lemar will retrofit with, order two 3300 series cables and then install. You would have gear and throttle selection at the helm. I have always made my customers stop and start the engine at the engine from a safety stand point. As for the trailer, the jury is still out.

New 25

Dave, I saw the new 25 at the Portland, ME boat show and I belive its one of the better, new small boat designs. I was a bit skepitcal based on some opinions on the posts (I think we have a hard-core base of water ballasted 26ers on here) but quickly changed my mind. My opinion on the 25: Lots of room for a 25 footer, with the cockpit being 6'8" long with teak seats above and plenty of room to stretch the legs (I'm 6'6"). I could easily lay down in the aft birth with room for my girlfriend. Lots of sitting room below with a nice teak ?? table. The compression post and cabin ladder are made of thick Stainless Steel pipes. I love the removable inner liner if you need to replace any deck hardware. The galley is built under par compare to the rest of the boat but it is something I will get over. As for the construction, I though the hardware was of good quality- stainless steel cleats and handrails, there is a nice touch of teak throughout and the wheel steering seemed very rugged. As i walked around on the boat (200+ lbs. of me), I did not notice any soft spots in the fiberglass. Very impressive concidering I was recently on a 2004 Com-Pac 23 (not saying that the 23 is a bad boat) and found some flex in the deck. I found the shoal draft keel to be more impressive in person than on the pictures. It looks larger on the boat than the pictures. Overall, I am interested to see how well it will sail. The price is very attractive and I think it blows the competitions 25 footer away (Catalina 250). Dave, thanks for keeping us posted on the new 25.

How do you think it will compare to the 25.5?

I am interested in the new 25 mainly due to the trailerable shallow draft - but do not want to give up too much performance and comfort. I am now sailing a 1986 Hunter 25.5, and would like to hear any thoughts about a comparison of these two boats...

addl. infor

Tot the fellow in Portland, I did not know that a bunch of my water ballast boats were out there. consider me the godfather of these boats. Get my direct email if you ever have questions but I do not allow it to be posted on the forum out of respect for the other dealers as I am a full line dealer. Please respect me for this. Thanks All boats are good but there is a matter of asthetics and what the boat will be used for. Regarding the Hunter 25.5, there is no comparison in my books as the 25.5 is not a traileralbe sailboat that the new 25 is intended for.

Have you had a chance to sail one Dave?

Dave, have you had the chance to sail one yet? I’m very interested in hearing your opinion about its sailing characteristics, especially about its up wind pointing abilities. After seeing the boat in Chicago I’m still concerned about that keel. I now sail a wing keel 23. Everybody knows the 23 is not a great boat up wind but I have to think that it will out point the new 25 by quite a bit. As for the trailer, the one at Chicago looked pretty stout, much better than the Ken’s welding service trailer that came with my 23.
