I posted about hatch doors a few weeks ago and decided to make my own. These were made from salvaged cherry wood that was taken from a old house being torn down. They may not be pratical but I think they look good.

hello all
i to made new cabin doors.. i followed the style normally used on my Mac25... i used red oak wood, and put 4 coats of marine grade varnish on it... i think they look good..

They look nice, but usually wood used for this purpose has a waterproof glue if a laminate or if pieces are glued together. So, I hope you used epoxy, or Resourcinol or some other waterproof adhesive. If no glue joints and not a laminate cherry wood (plywood), no worry.
the doors come apart into 4 parts... each section lifts out.. and can be stored easily inside the cabin in a pocket..
i used 1/2 thick red oak.... if i had gone thicker, i would have used buiscut joints, and gorilla glue, then sealed it with marine varnish..
i opted for the 4 part drop in panels like this, so i can store them inside easily out of the way..

Both projects look fine. You will both have the satisfaction of saying, "Yes, I made those." when people ask about them.
Question for JWH2050: Does the entire unit slide up and out of the hatchway if necessary?

We use our hatch doors just in the marina. They are way too flimsy to be trusted at sea. Since we back into our slip, we can see out the doors to decide if we're home when neighbors come knocking. LOL. They are so much easier to go through than the hatch boards. Yours look great. My biggest problem is keeping them shut in windy conditions as the galley is right next to the companionway and having the flame blow away from the sensor is such a PITA.
Looks good. Made these for my Hunter 23.5 last year,one with glass,one with screens.Used split hinges so i can store below or to change out doors.
