New h23 upgrade pictures

I installed new aluminum sliding hatch covers. I was tired of the teak ones breaking when a guest went below and rested their weight on them. The original and 1 replacement broke. No more breakage now. I installed the Harkin 1" blocks below my genoa sheet cam cleats. Mounted low they locked up my sheets by over lapping. In 18 knot winds racing last night with the blocks we had no over lapping. Garhauer 1" x 4' whisker pole/ spinnaker pole track with sliding car. I used this and my new 1-1/4" Forespar adjustable pole with my Gus sails 135 genoa down wind at 18 knots and no one with spinnakers in "B" fleet even gained on us. In fact I think we gained on the 3 Cat 22's and 2 Bene First 23.5. That Hunter 22 gave us heck all the way but we crossed the line about 20 boat lengths ahead of him. Brian, West Marine had the best price on the blocks under my jib sheet cam cleats. They are Harkin. The 1" x 4' Whisker/ Spinnaker pole track and sliding car are from Garhauer. They did make the sliding car as a special order as they only stock them in 1-1/4" The Aluminum sliding hatch covers I made. I just purchased 2, 36" x 1-1/2" Aluminum pieces from Home Depot, cut to length, angled the aft end and sanded all edges smooth. My original wood pieces are 1-1/4" but I have had no problems with these at 1-1/2". Charles

Nice upgrades! I noticed you have the original companionway step. How is it supported? I have what I think is the same step but it does not 'bridge' the settee supports. Am I missing something?

Brad, I assume it is original. It has 2 pieces of plywood screwed to the settee's. This fits into the bottom of the step on each side. I will measure the plywood pieces tomorrow for you and take pictures of the pieces and the bottom of the original step on each side. A previous owner mounted the fire ext. on the bottom of the step. They are having a meet and greet for everyone new on our dock from last Memorial day until now tomorrow night so it may be Sunday before I get them posted for you. Charles

I like the whisker pole track! As for the companionway step mine is exactly the same as in the pictures.

Brad, Here is the sizes and pictures. Step braces are, 5-5/16 wide x 3-15/16 tall. The wood is 7/8" thick at the bottom that is screwed into the sette side and notched out to 9/16 at the top. It has 1" above the sette top plywood. This above part fits into the step ends on the bottom of it.

Thanks Charles! I think those wood supports on either side of the settee is what I don't have.

Also, does you boat have an adjustable topping lift? Mine boat has just have a fixed length line with a 'dog leash' clip at the end , it's pretty funky in my opinion.

LOL! I was wondering what those pieces were for! I have them in a box of all the wood the PO removed before I purchased the boat. Unfortunately, I don't have the original step, but just a piece of pressure treated 2x6 that lays between the settees (which can be fun when it slips out from under you and your acrobatic skills kick in). Those pictures will help a lot in getting it set back up correctly. :dance:

Peptobysmol, I will try and upgrade the traveler next year as the budget allows.

Brad, Yes I can adjust my topping lift at the front of my boom but also at the back taking in 2 shackles. The PO did this and I never cared for it but it works just fine. I have never used the front of the boom adjustment. Don't even know if it works or how to do it.

My Kenyon boom has three sets of blocks built into it at each end. The port set is rigged with the Jiffy Reefing system, the center set is rigged with the mainsail outhaul, and the starboard set is rigged with the topping lift. The topping lift is held in place by a built in quick-release cam cleat at the mast end. To adjust the topping lift just release the cleat and make your adjustment. Seems to work fine as long as I remember to free the mainsheet.

Say - I see from the pics that you have a Bimini on your H23 - how do you like it? is it in the way of the backstay? and what size is it or was it modified at all? thanks - Mike

Would you happen to have a picture of both the jiffy reef system on the boom and its tie into the main? And the topping lift at boom/mast junction.

So you don't use the starboard lock-off lever below the boom goose-neck for the topping lift?

Taichi, I ordered my bimini from this site. It clearly states it is not for use while sailing, I had to move the main sheet attachment on the boom forward 5". It touches the backstay. It is low and has no window to view the windex. You have to lean out or aft to look up and see the windex. It blocks easy access to go forward. The spiders love to nest in it under its cover. It makes boarding difficult. With all these negatives I love it in this Texas Sun. Today is supposed to be our 1st 100deg day and I am going to the marina in about an hour. Without it I would wait until dark to sail. Just cruising it is fine and keeps guests and crew happy. It seems to be well made and of good quality material. Good luck, Charles
