I've had this boat for about two months or so and haven't had it on the water yet -- my old boat was still at the slip. Unless I can figrue a way to mount runners on the keel, I'll have to keep it on the hard until the ice moves out. Looks like next spring -- so I'll continue to spruce it up. I have a question about the halyard winch. On the cabin top, one is mounted just aft of the main and jib halyard clutches (makes sense). Also, there is a winch pad (no winch) on the mast on the same side (starboard) as the main and jib halyards. What's its purpose? It's on the wrong side of the mast to be used for the spinnaker halyards.???? Also, the Kenyon spars are not equipped with vang attachments. What's the best to install -- bails or solid mounted vang brackets? Thanks for the help. Come on spring!!!

Winch pad on mast

I also have an H23 with a Kenyon mast. Mine is an '86. The H23 came from the factory with a single speed winch on the starboard side of the mast to hoist the main. There was no winch for hoisting the jib. A previous owner of your H23 routed the halyards to the cockpit. They probably took the winch off the mast pad and mounted it on the cabin top. As for the vang: Take a look at a boomkicker in the chandlery on this site. I have one on my Christmas list. It will do away with the topping lift as well as help maintain sail shape while easing the traveler. Oh, and you will still need to mount a bail on the boom for the vang. I believe the boomkicker comes with a standard vang. Another option: A rigid vang i.e.: http://garhauermarine.com/index.cfm run a search for vang... Enjoy your H23. I have a lot of fun with mine. She is tender but pretty quick for her size.

Boom Vang

I have a boom kicker on my 26.5. It's much easier than dealing with a topping lift! I don't think it comes with a boom vang. But if you get the Kicker you'll need the Vang. On a down wind run the kicker will pop out of the boom bracket if the vang doesn't have tension on it. On a run, the vang has tension anyway to provide proper boom twist.

Congratulations on the 23, on mine I just riveted a bail to the mast, it has worked out fine for several years , Mike
