My wife and I just completed our purchase of a 1986 H-31. I have reviewed all of the post in the archives and have just a few questions. 1. How must rake in the upper part of the mast is accceptable. This boat as a hook at the top. 2. The main sheet system is original equipment, should it be replaced and a vang added. If so, what kind is best. 3. Where can I find info on a lift for the tender, we have a 3 person inflatable w/ 3 hp OB. Thanks for your help. Bob

couple of answers

1) Rake is different from prebend (hook). Rake is the angle that the mast makes when all of your shrouds are slackened. I don't know the precise measurement for the H31, but I'd take an idle guess and say that a weight tied to the main halyard should be around 6-12" aft of the mast at boom level. This is set by adjusting the forestay and backstay turnbuckles(after ensuring that the mast is straight athwartships). Prebend is then applied by adjusting the shroud tensions and the tension on the backstay. I don't know how much prebend is appropriate for an h31. 2) The original mainsheet system is probably fine, but you might want to replace the line if it's original. There are 200 zillion ways to rig a mainsheet -- fine and gross tuning, double ends, purchases of 2:1 to 24:1, etc. A lot depends on where the traveler is located. If I were you, I'd simply sail it for a few months. If it's fine, it's fine. If not, then investigate. Vang, absolutely. Very important when running downwind. 3) Not my area of expertise.

Bob: In general terms here is the quote from the manual. "You are now ready to 'tune in' the desired mast bend, which is 1% of the mast height above the boom (.01 x mast height above boom). On a 50'mast, this would be .5 feet at the mid point of the mast." Your mast height is 41'5" the boom is probably 3' so you are dealing with about .4 ft or 5 inches. The original traveler was alway junk. I replaced mine with a Harken about 10 years ago. There are many good options for this, so I'd shop around. The reason I switched to Harken was that they drilled my track to fit the original mounting holes. I would assume that the other manufactures would do the same for you. For a rigid vang you cannot beat the price on Garhauer (under $300). You will also need new deck organizers and sheet stoppers. Garhauer deck organizers are very reasonably priced. When you lift the dink, where are you going to put it?

Tender lift

I suppose one could mount davits on the stern, but I like having that space uncluttered, and I like to be able to see behind the boat. We lift our dink over the lifeline on its side, then store it upside down with the transom against the mast. This requires some muscles, but is cheap. Before getting underway, we either leave the dink tied-up in the slip or tow it behind. Our 5hp Nissan is stored on a wood transom mounted on the stern rail. We tie the dink up with the transom to starboard, then use the main halyard to lower the motor onto the transom. Again, cheap but requires muscle.

dinghy lift for H31

On my 29.5 I carried the OB on a bracket on the stern rail (stbd side). then brought my inflatable across the stern - tied the swim ladder handles to the sideline on the dinghy, then lift the outboard side up until it was against the stern rails-lashed the sideline to the rails-some windage i suppose, but easy to do singlehanded and easy to deploy, with no heavy lifting and no blocking vis- this is a 7' rollup

Thanks for responding to my questions. I will take a look at the manual this weekend. We will be taking the boat home to her slip on Sunday. The sea trial was great, but she needs a vang, will look into getting one ASAP. Thanks Again, Bob
