Has anyone seen or heard anything about the new Hunter 25? Check it out at www.huntermarine.com Appears to be non- water ballast. The 23.5 and the 260 are gone?

Saw it at Strictly Sail Chicago

I crawled around on one at the Strictly Sail show in Chicago. The 25 is based on the 240 hull. It has a solid keel that looks about the same as the Swing Keel/Board when the boat is on the trailer. About 6" to 8" of profile from the bottom. I asked the dealer how well it goes to windward without a board. I forgot to lower the board on my 240 once and it was terrible to windward. I think you'd want to try before you buy. Enclosed head like on the 260. I have a 98 240 and there is a big differenc in the interior. They've obviously stripped out the ballast tank area so there is more "crawl room" under the cockpit for the mainbunk. Our 98 has molded plastic surrounding the lower bunk (crawl in at the starboard seats) this area is all open now. The cockpit steps are built on a SS brace that attaches directly to the floor.

H25 keel...

is VERY small and shallow. Can't see where this boat will point very high.

Come on now,

there has to be a centerboard tucked up somewhere in that stubby keel! If not, the new H25 must be a dog to windward.

H-25

I too saw it in Chicago ... it reminded me of my Catalina 22 - but about 1700# more boat to trailer. The head is enclosed - but with a curtain instead of a hatch. Overall - I'll hang on to my H-26. Tom Grass

Stubby Little Keel....

...does not have a centerboard tucked up there anywhere. Saw the boat at a show - it's pretty neat except for the windward issue. Dealer said no board to keep costs down. I'd just as soon spend the extra money to be able to get home at the end of the day!

No center board at Chicago show

I went on board it at the Chicago boat show, and asked the dealer if it had a daggar board or swing keel. He said it does not. Also the boat does not have a shelf on which to put all the extra stuff you bring with you when you sail. Even things like sailing gloves do not have a home on this boat. I totally need the shelf that is in my H23 and I can not imagine getting along without one. Just my thoughts. One more thing seems odd. The specs for the H23 show a depth of 2'3". The 25 says the depth is 2'. I will have to measure the keel on my H23, but it seems to be more than 3" deeper than the keel they show on the 25. Or maybe the H25 hull goes deeper in the water than my H23 does. Any thoughts out there?

Nice Photos *pop

I had to race around the Philly show to get out before the snow storm shut us in. I didn't have as much time as I would have liked. These photos are good. The more I see, the more I like my H260.

260 Sunset

Hunter's Eric Macklin was at the Portland, OR boat show and spoke at our January Hunter club meeting. He said the 260 mold was worn out. I have heard Hunter was not selling enough of them to invest in new molds. Also the water ballast has always been a problem with small leaks through the compression post and swing keel fittings. i think they just decided it was to much trouble for a small return on investment. I love my 260 and would not trade it for any other Hunter, but it does take loving attention.I guess I enjoy the projects almost as much as the sailing. Brigg

Great pictures

Those are great pictures that were posted of the Hunter 25. After seeing that I am shocked even more. It sounds like Hunter, in an attempt to keep production costs low, went back in time reconstructed a reed boat. Well, maybe not quite that bad, but it doesn't seem like much. I don't see a demand for that boat at all. Originally, I was going to move from my H22 to a new H260. I was disappointed when they decided to stop making the H260 (it was a great boat). Now I think that I will go to plan B and within the next 5 years I will go to a Catalina 30. Such is life!

Catalina 250

Don't discount the Catalina 250 - WB. While not a H-260 - it's probably worth considering. Tom Grass H-26 Grasshopper II #174 Lake Carlyle, Illinois (St. Louis)

what's a "reed" boat?

The C250 is a nice boat. I like the H260 alot better, but if the choice was between a C250 or an H25, I don't know, haven't seen the H25 in person. regarding the keel, it looks alot like a 260 with the centerboard up. I tried sailing with my centerboard in various positions at various points of sail and it doesn't sail to windward very well with the board up. Slip slide'n away. Hunter has been building sailboats for along time though, and some pretty good ones too it seems. I can't imagine they would sink a bunch of $'s into a new design without a little R&D and some market analysis. I can just see the engineers faces when they realize, "oh crap we forgot to put a keel on it" hehe. It will be interesting to hear some feedback on it when they start hitting the water.

Ummmmm...

I was referring to the boats the Egyptians sailed on the Nile river that were made or reeds. I guess it was my way of saying that the H25 seems to be one huge step backwards from the H260.

Thanks Jim Seamans

Those were great photos. Thanks,it looks like they started with the H240 and possibly added a little length past the transom, and extra depth w/o the balast.Otherwise looks like a 240. I chartered one for a week in the Keys. Was well suited to the skinny water but seemed light.Hunter sent me some generic info, but nothing as good as your pics.
