I live in lake Charles Louisiana. Hardly no one here sails. There is one lil yacht club with a few members that bob around.

Spend alot of time on the water but it's chasing fish in a 20 ft center console bay boat.

I've been wanting to restore an old sail boat. I finally found one (cm21) around here I picked up for 500 bucks. And it needs work. ALOT of work. The hull, mast ,jib all seem to be in good shape. Has main sail and 2 jib sails. 3.3 ml.

By what I've read online. It looks like it has everything.
I just started this project 2 days ago.

I saw a couple pics on this forum. I'm impressed. I just hope I can get mine like the few I've seen.

Welcome, Matt.. sailing is not too great there in Lake Charles... there is bigger sailing on Calcasieu Lake and Vermilion and Cote Blanche which can be accessed by trailer.

Welcome aboard, Matt.

There is a great bunch of guys here and they'll most likely have the answers to your questions. Heck, sometimes, *I* even have the answer.

Another really good source of information is the little board. Although Phil (The TSBB Mall Cop and bailing wire handler) complains about the software, he still provides a playground for trailer sailors. You can look around as a guest on www.trailersailor.com and decide if you want to use BOTH forums for help. I know a few of the people there personally as we've sailed together. (Is that a good thing, I don't know.)

.................. you'll get to the point where you'll actually enjoy working on the boat almost as much as sailing her. There is a real sense of satisfaction and accomplishment when you see the improvements you make as you go along. I find I appreciate my boat more for the work I've put into her.

Remember you will never be done with the sail boat . So you need to sail it anyways and the sooner the better ---It took me 5 years of refitting to understand this...Dale

Hey Matt

With your shoal draft, you can also consider sailing in the Vermillion.... Cypremort Point is fun... or port of Iberia in new Iberia.

There is a ton of knowledge on this site and many great ideas on how to same a lot of $$$ while fixing up your boat.

Fair winds,

Thanks for the insight everyone.

I'm at the point now where I'm just sitting in the cabin , staring at stuff blank. Lol.

As far as the region , vermillion is pretty far away. I can be in the gulf , 5 miles out to be exact , in 35 minutes in my bay boat.

I'm real familiar with the reefs and low spots in biglake (aka calcasieu ). I'm sure all my learning curves will take place there.

I've already learned everything I know about sailing right here on this forum. It's been a big help so far.

Siting in your boat, staring at various items is what my wife kindly calls "boat thrall". I've been locked in it's grip for hours on end. :) BEWARE! Welcome aboard and mind the boom (aka smart asses).

That explains why I get to the boat to work on projects and leave 2 hours later and nothing got done.

Slim picking looking for CM info. Joe Cox had the ball at one time. His site is gone, he is nowhere to be found. Next up was www.clipper-sailor.net, but Jim Carr's health failed and he quit updating that site some time ago. Then you have two Yahoo message boards, one abandoned full of porn links, and one so moderated, no one uses it. Couple posts a year. The site mentioned is pretty out to lunch. The back end falls off to save server space. No archive there to speak of. Thousands of image links, most all dead to save server space. Crying shame.

Jim Carr died on April 23rd, (RIP) and his site fell off the internet Oct 30. I happened to notice it gone in the two week window to save it, so I paid the back rent, and a year up front, and it is up again, thanks to his wife, Judy that wanted to see his work stay alive. His site was old, many links had failed. Working on pumping the water out of her bilge. I turned off the organ grinder music, and deleted the Jr high lined yellow paper background, but most everything else is as Jim left it, with repaired links to most things I could still find.

Then there is my site, www.clippermarine.org. only a year old, so little archived yet. Just broke 2000 posts in the forum. It takes time building a site from scratch. Linking my site with Jim's site should help.

I see at least four people in this thread with CMs or CM history. Lots of people know and love the old sailboats, just a matter of establishing a good solid database that is stable and secure, we can pull knowledge from. In time, we will have that again.

Welcome aboard Matt. I'm hip to the "staring at stuff" feeling. I've found over the years that if you make a list of the "big rock" items that need attention and then ruthlessly focus on them the little rock projects get done also. mainly because you have to fix them to finish the big rocks off.
You'll get there.

Hello Gary, I'm sorry you can't let go of your grudge. Letting things like that fester under your skin for years will only hurt you, in the long run.

Matt,

Welcome to SBO and welcome to the Clipper Marine family. The Clipper forum at Trailersailer.com probably has the most extensive, searchable, archive of information on the Clipper Marine sail boats that you'll find. The information stored there goes back several decades. Not to mention the help that the other members of the forum freely offer. There are a couple of boat builders with CM boats that frequently provide their incite and information, along with the fact that almost everyone on the forum has some experience in rebuilding their boats.

Myself, I have 2 Clipper Marine boats, a CM26 MKII and a CM30. The 26 is still a work in progress whereas the 30 was maintained pretty well by he PO's. "Superior Pleasure" is my pride and joy.

The Clipper forum has been pretty quite over the summer, but life is slowly returning.

So come give us a look see, I think you'll be pleased with what you find.
