I am installing a new Garmin 741SX and would like to connect it to the Raymarine ST4000 auto helm. Is it possible to marry the new NEMA 2000 to the older Auto helm? Who do you go to for advice Garmin or Raymarine? I am a newbie to both units but would like them to be able to get them linked together. There is a very old Garmin 45 now connected to the autopilot. Thanks for any help you can give me.

if i am not mistaken you have to use NEMA 0183 to make it work i don't think the 4000 can talk that language

The Garmin chartplotter and the ST 4000 course computer probably won't communicate unles there is a NEMA 0183 interface available for the Garmin. You may need to purchase a Garmin course computer, but all of the mechanical hardware from the ST 4000 should be usable. Just my conjecture.

Your garmin supports NEMA 0183. - set up on page 34 of your manual I believe. Wiring diagram will also be in your manual. The usual catch connecting Garmin to Your autopilot is that the Garmin will usually use the 12v ground wire as the NEMA 0183 -(negative) connection to the autopilot as well.

Hey,

I have a Garmin 740S and it's connected to my Ray EV 100 pilot (and Simrad RS35). I use NMEA 2000 for everything and it's very easy to connect. I had to buy a converter cable for the Ray to go from Seatalk NG to NMEA 2000 (they are really the same thing, just the plugs are different) and that was it.

When you write 'ST4000 AutoHelm' what exactly do you mean? The EV100 pilot includes an 4000 MK 2 wheel drive, ACU 100 control unit, P70 control head. EV1 sensor core, and a bunch of cables. The newer pilots use Seatalk NG / NMEA 2000 while the older units use Seatalk.

Good luck,
Barry
