I am looking to upgrade the furling system on my 1987 Legend 37. It had the orginal Hood 810 Continous line system on it. Due to how I use my boat - I also race with her, I am considering upgrading to a Harken Sytstem, along with the fact that they are just down the road from me. Any experience with upgading to a Harken system?? What size unit, etc??? Tim Gabrielse BLAZE Sail # 42082

Harken Fits Perfect

Hi Tim, I went thru this 2 years ago, after researching every furling system out there, I installed a harken UNIT 1.5..If you want to keep the furling system below deck (best for racing, and you do not have to recut sails) the harken is the way to go. One of the problems is the height of the drum, with a single line the drum is short, so you have to fit something in that space, the harken fits. When I installed the drum, the only mod I had to make was to cut two bolts in the anchor well (in the "V", chainplate bolts). Another mod that should be done is to replace the headstay with the right size (LARGER) hunter installed an undersized headstay so that they could put in an undersized furling unit, yes undersized!!!! Look at the 35's furler, same one. If you do the installation yourself, do it with the mast off the boat, as the clevis pin at the top is very difficult to install (also undersized) and even more difficult with the proper size. I bought my system with the headstay, and foils precut and installed it myself for less than 2K. I race and this system is slick, all you have to do to have the 2 luff groove headfoil system is to lower the upper swivel below the feeder (1 screw) works great. Also another benefit of this system is that it is so much easier to unstep the mast. Good luck, Larry S. S/V ESCAPE

Harken Is The Way To Go

I also upgraded to a Harken 1.5 two years ago and have been thrilled since. The only modification I did to the boat was to have my fiberglass "artist" fill one of the two line exit ports on the deck. Otherwise the system was a good fit and works very well. Good Luck, Rick
