Can anyone suggest a source for New England Rope where I can get 3/8" Sta Set X or Regatta Braid about 49 feet long with a eye splice on one end to replace my mainsheet on a Hunter 290. Thank you.

Yes tried this site but they do not list New England Rope, only Samson

Stay Set X ?

Stay-Set X for a main sheet? Perhaps a halyard but why for a main sheet? P.S. I buy all my running rigging from Gary @ Cajun Trading Co.! GREAT SERVICE, GREAT LINE AND AMAZING PRICES!! Contact Gary at Cajun Trading Co. http://www.cajuntrading.ca/

Thanks mainsail

Checking the polyester braid, those prices are very good. How long have you been dealing with this place?

not sta-set x

Sta-set x is not an optimal line for sheets. I sailed a boat once with the genoa sheets rigged with sta-set x, and it was very difficult on my hands. Neither did it turn well over the winches. The tight turns over the sheaves in your mainsheet tackle are even worse. I love it for halyards, though! Regatta braid is my favorite line for sheets; I love its hand and flexibility. If stretch is a concern, there are better lines. Regular sta-set is fine, and you'll find it on most any boat you look.

Higgs.

I've been buying from there for a few years and will be placing a spring order this year too. He's a one man shop, as far as I know, and the shipping takes a little time to get through customs but it's well worth it. .

My real concern is how this stuff hold up over the years. A mainsheet should last 20 years or more. I am replacing mine because the self tailing winch will not grip the worn line.

20 years?

Twenty years? Wow you've got some high expectations. I personally replace running rigging about every 5-10 as UV can take it's toll. The line I get from Cajaun is every bit as good IMHO as NER or Sampson line and I've never seen any of my NER or Sampson stuff I've had over the years last 20 years at least not to my standards of what I consider a safe and usable line....

Things like mainsheets should and can last a long time. Is 20 years pressing it? Probably. I am guessing my mainsheet is of that age and I want to replace it. The fact is, though, that the biggest problem I have is that the line slips in the self tailing winch. It is not going to break.

Hey thanks for the link. I have sworn off of West Marine because of what they have done to their advantage program (2%, was 5% when they started). I need a couple of new halyards. Oh, and Selena, regular Sta-Set for sheets. Sta-Set X for halyards.

Higgs..

Higgs, The line Cajun sells I believe is made by Novabraid: http://www.novabraid.com/products/pleasure_marine.html Having been on a boat where a halyard broke, at a most inopportune time I no longer push it especially with halyards. Of course with a main sheet as long as you have some spare line aboard your ok to push it a little. Most main sheets are over sized for "hand comfort" any way so short of a very hard jibe in 45 knots it's unlikely you'll ever snap a main sheet.. Have you serviced you winch lately? That may be part of the problem with the jaws no longer wanting to move to accept the line? Just a thought..

The winch

The winch is not the problem. The main sheet is worn smooth and the self tailing mechanism no longer grips it

OK..

I've seen that happen before where from the UV, salt and wear it gets almost polished and too slick for the jaws to grab well..... Again, I can't say enough good things about Cajun's service, price and the quality of the line. You know how fussy I am and Gary goes above and beyond something that is rare in todays "retail" community..
