New engine for a monsun

I own a 1975 monsun #225 with the original volvo penta MD2B 25 hp engine. My trusty diesel has finally kicked the proverbial bucket ( water in the combustion chamber) and my even more trusted diesel mechanic tells me I need a new engine. My question is what brand of diesel should I get and how many hp? My mechanic recommends a kubota , but some other friends recommend yanmar. I will also need a new prop i am guessing. I plan mostly to cruise here in the puget sound, but hope to keep my beloved 'Narwhal' for many years so I want something reliable. I also would like a quiet engine with low vibration. Any suggestions, experience or advise is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jon Maron, Seattle

bukh ?

Thanks for the reply. I asked my mechanic about bukh, and he said they have not been marinized for over 20 years. What is it about Bukh that you like? Do you have experience with this engine in a Monsun/ Thanks. Jon.

Bukh, Is approved for lifeboat

service. Will start with a hand crank. There is also nothing wrong with Kubota.

New Volvo

Hi Jon, We just purchased our Monsun (#177) last year and it had just been repowered with a new Volvo MD2020D (20 hp) that only had 8 hours on it when we bought it. I've got about 60 hrs on it now and I so far I am very pleased. Feel free to ask me any specific questions. Let me know if you ever head up Vancouver way - we could have a nw monsun rendevous! Cheers, Chris Chris Gratham HR Monsun #177 Patience North Vancouver, BC

monsun engine

I fitted a yanmar 30gm fresh water cooled 3 cylinder in 2000. Needed a new 2 bladed prop otherwise all other gear reused. Engine very smooth and very quiet!

Bukh

We had a Bukh in our Contessa 32. It was an OK engine, very Volvo like, but parts were only available from a distributor in NJ and quite expensive. So far my MD2B is still purring in our hull #13 Monsun, but I'll follow the discussion for that inevitable day.

looking for some V=P answers

Does anyone have the original Volvo control panel and the original starter/generator? My recent purchase of a 74 Prout with the V-P engine/outdrive has the tach (doesn't work) and temp gauge (always stays on hot now) and 2 pull switches (cannot tell what they should do). The key seems to have 2 positions - can anyone tell me why? And now the combo starter/generator does not charge. Any suggestions?

Beta

Volvo and Yanmar are safe options and reliable engines. I have seen Bukh refered to as "The Rolls Royce of small marine engines" (PBO`s engine specialist). Though they are big, heavy and expensive. I bought a Beta-Kubuta 28 hp for my Rasmus and I am very satisfied. Smooth running and with a big generator. The probably most important thing is to choose the right engine size. In my opinion a 20 hp should be enough for a Monsun. The Monsun is medium to heavy weight, but is rather slim and not catching to much wind. Be sure to choose the right balance between gear ratio and a good three-blade prop. PIM
