I am about to install new ST-60 depth and speed transducers on a 1983 H31. Where is the preferred location on this boat to locate those new thru-hulls? Greg W De Pere, WI

Instrument Thru Hulls

There is an interior hull liner made up in a grid of the liner pans and floor beams that does not extend all the way to the bow. Assuming you have no existing holes to re-use, it would be preferable to core drill thru the area where the hull is a single thickness, but accessible from the inside, most likely in the 'V' berth area ahead of the keel. I'd look at other 31's to see where they have their thru hulls. Seems unusual that the boat wouldn't have at least a depth sounder already.

H31_83-87 ST60 Transducer Locations

When I upgraded my instruments to RayMarine ST60 Series in my 1987 H31, the original locations were used, under the V Berth. Bill

mine were located in the V berth and in the head.

Mine came with a thru-hull under the V berth for the depth transducer and another thru-hull under the head vanity for the speed transducer. I have since replaced the transducers with Raymarine units using the same holes.

Different location

Hmmm... my gauge thru-hulls are in a different location on my 1983 H31. Just outside the entrance to the head is a removable wooden grate much like the floor piece inside the head. My two thru-hulls are located here.

WOW, what a difference from year to year! My 1987 has both holes under the V Berth about 6 inches forward of the bulkhead in line with the depth in front of the speed. The hull bottom is flat in that location. Suggestion: the bulkhead under the V Berth had a very small door. After killing my arms working on the plumbing, I cut out to be a big hole for better access and now I cover it with a snap on screen for better ventilation. Greg, if the original locations that you have were working, you might want to consider using them, instead of drilling more holes in the bottom of your boat! bill

Locations

I don't have the same model but I did relocate my speed log. It is important to have your speed log located on center. If not the readings you will get will be different dependent on which tack you are sailing, neither being correct. The ideal location for any speed log is 1 or 2 feet forward of the keel and on center. I cut a hole in my floor boards and installed a removable deck plate for access to the transducer. The ease of removing through this deck plate combined with a self-sealing log means I can remove the speed log in a few seconds with very little water intrusion. As a result I remove the log each time I leave the boat which precludes ever having to paint or clean it.

Not surprising that the locations are different

Based on the different variations I've see of my 83-87 H31, I suspect the instrumentation is a dealer add on. I'm not sure if there was anything offered in the way of instrumentation by Hunter from the factory, but if so, few ordered it. Working with my own boat.. I can state for sure the instumentation is not original equipment.
