New Depth Gauge with Other Mfr's Transducer

Hey all,Has anyone used another manufacturers depth gauge with a different mfr's transducer?Example: Navman gauge with Corinthian transducer.My depth gauge is erratic and I would like to replace with a newer model, but don't want to haul the boat to install a new transducer.The old transducer is 200 KHZ.I think it should work but I would like some feedback from someone who has done it in the past.Thanks,Bill

Match the frequency

When I was in the boat business, we replaced a few "fish finders" with newer ones that used the same frequency with no ill effects. I suspect that a mis-match will at best give you false readings or at worst wipe out the transmitter unit in the main box.

Depth display options

Hi Bill -A Datamarine Corinthian transducer will work with a variety of new depth sounders. The Corinthian has a phono type plug which will plug right into a round Signet Display. The Raymarine ST60 or Simrad IS12 will also work. It would simply require cutting off the phono connector from the transducer cable and crimping on spade connectors in its place. I'm not as familiar with the NavMan but I believe it is also a 200 kHz unit.Hope this helps,Trevor

Trevor no mfr will recommend using their

transducer with another unit.I'm sure they want to sell their transducer, (better for the bottom line). I figured a transducer is a transducer. My corinthian has been repaired a couple of times and it is about 10 years old. I guess it is time for a change, as I am sure technology has changed tremendously It is also time to see how reliable other mfr's units are.Trevor I guess from your response you have seen this done in the past?Thanks

Transducers are all different

Some may work with another brand of display but you may ruin one or both by testing. I used to make transducers and it is not worth the effort unless you have some assurance from the manufacturers that they will work together. I doubt that you will ever get that.
