Does anyone know where to purchase a new cutlass bearing for a 1982 Hunter 27 and are there any that are different and better than others? Hate to sound like a total dip! but I'm new to all of this.

Buying the cutless bearing is the easy part...

...Replacing it is another story. You can buy the cutless bearing from West Marine or Boat US. You need to know the shaft diameter, bearing length and OD. But if you are new this, I srongly suggest you have the yard replace it. If you really insist on doing it yourself, you can find lots of discussion on the subject and drawings of tool you have to make in order to do the job right. The bearing has to be pressed out and new one pressed in. You also will need a prop puller. Keep us posted on how you do. Lee

I did this last year as a rookie.

I bought mine off the shelf from Zanheiser's in Solomon's Island, Md. West Marine needed to special order the bearing. Using heat I managed to remove the old prop and the set screws for the cutlass bearing. Since I didn't have a special tool to press the bearing out I used a piece of copper water pipe from the hardware store. I cut it to size so that I could thread the prop nut back on with a washer and press the bearing out. Luckily I bought enough pipe to do this a couple of times because the pipe bent as I was pressing on the bearing. I then, using various items and again the prop nut, pressed the new bearing back in. The old salts at the yard couldn't believe how easy a time I had in doing this considering the age of my boat. If you want more details email me at bartellmike@aol.com.

Using The Prop Nut Works But..

you are putting pressure on the transmission unless you had some other way of keeping the prop shaft from puling out of the boat when you did the job. I am always very careful about putting any kind of pressure, and in particular any shock, on the transmission.

Morse marine bearing...can't believe I still have the box (and the old bearing)...did the job myself last season (never again though). Good luck...it's a great boat!! I now have a 29.5, but, think of my old '82 h27 often. Good luck!!
