Anyone have an idea of ballpark cost for new, decent quality interior cushions? V-berth and two settees in a 26-footer. Thanks for your best guess.

had 2 new v berth cushions and 2 new settees for my 26 footer made using my old foam rubber. All 4 cushions were made out of Sumbrella in a small upolstery shop $800

Looking too

I have found prices from $650 for covers with no foam, to $1000 for covers with foam for a 25 footer. The upholstery guy told me to buy my materials from someone else, and he would make the cushions. JoAnne Fabrics and the like benefit from huge volume discounts compared to his little shop.

Foam is the expensive ingredient ...

We spent about $1,300 for our 27' boat with a quarter birth included. We replaced all the foam and that is what drove the price way up. We had a local upholstery shop do it and the cost surprised me.

Cushions

I recently purchased a used 27 ft Catalina and the cushions were a disgrace. I bought Sunbrella for the cockpit cushions and had my tailor sew up new covers. Then I got ambitious and took ALL the cushions to the tailor with the new material. The exterior cushions to sew cost about $220 and the rest of the story will be told tomorrow when the interior cushions are picked up and I get handed the bill.

why would you buy sunbrella

for interior cushions? It's a waste of money that could be better spent on good quality upholstery fabric.

I made my own for about $130 plus the cost of a used Juki

sewing machine. I used 3" foam and in retrospect it would have been better to use 1" closed cell foam added to the original 2" foam. I used canvas to cover the cushions from the wholesale Garment District. The total cost was about $130 not counting the machine. They took about 2 hours to make each. Making the piping added a lot of labor and time. Without piping they can be knocked out in under an hour each. I am using the Juki to make a pop top cover that is working out nicely. For that I am using Odyssey III canvas. Good fade resistant and water proof canvass at a great price. From the window cutouts I will make some winch covers. I was recently at Jo Anns Fabrics and found some canvas under $6/yd., it appeared to be a really good quality. I don't know how fade resistant it is but that is not as important inside the cabin. Next time I go by I will ask for a swatch and test it. Crackerjacks has the right idea, a tailor will sew them up for a lot less than an auto or boat upholsterer. A seamstress will even do it for less than a tailor. Frank

cushions

I used the sunbrella on the cockpit (exterior) cushions and went to a local discount upholstry house and bought fabric @ $3.00. Total cost to get the interior, exterior cushions with material and labor will run about $600. The amazing factor in the story is the cushions were done in four days.

make your own

Just bought a used necchi heavy duty sewing machine for 85$. Ordered 25 yards of fabric on ebay for 57$ + 21$ shipping, bought thread for 15$ a couple of needles-cheap, and most important Don Casey's "canvaswork & Sailrepair" book. Very good book, starts out with simple projects to get used to sewing and covers everything from boom tents to custom dodgers and sail repair. Gonna save a fortune by doing myself. All i need now is a source for reasonable foam. Maybe i can use old furniture foam? or something. Any ideas?

A couple places for foam

I just saw last night that Defender sells all sorts of foam. Prices look pretty good, too. I'm trying to find a link I had for foam that was custom cut for different V berths. In my search for the site I'd been to, I came across several sites offering the same service.

Fabricator

Search for a local foam fabricator (wholesaler). Foam bought at a retailer or uphoulstry shop is marked up significantly (500% or more?). I'm in Ohio and use this fabricator; http://www.foamcfp.com/.
