New Companionway Doors

Hired a guy to create folding companionway doors to replace hatch boards. Entire door section slips out of track in case want to put hatch boards in (hurricane). Added pics to our photo album http://forums.hunter.sailboatowners.com/album.php?albumid=1733&page=2

Attached are pics of the doors. Has both plexiglass and screen panels that slide out.

The top rail should extend all the way over the stile. He left you with end grain wood exposed to the weather. The rails should be morticed and the stiles tenoned so that water can't lay on the end grain. Nice look and fit though.

Nice upgrade. I built some similar for our boat and the Admiral really likes the extra light
inside. I ended up putting a plastic film inside to obscure vision like a bathroom window.
I couldn't believe what teak prices have done.

Nice doors. I did the same on my boat, I would suggest that you permanently mount the glass and chalk really well or the rain will come thru like you won't believe.

We've done something quite similar for our boat. They do not have a place for the lock to go on because we only use them while we are on the boat in a marina.

Hatchboards are still our preferred way to SAIL. Even the Admiral doesn't trust our doors to be there after getting pooped. Just something to think about.

After 35 years of racing/sailing on Lake Michigan, BVI, East and West coast of FL, we've never been pooped even though we've been in some storms. We've always had a dodger and high bridgedeck to keep water from going into cabin from cockpit. We've had companionway doors on other boats and had no problems. Guess there is a first time for everything. Will keep your suggestions in mind.

I built doors for our boat this spring. Maybe the best improvement yet, especially first thing in the morning when the dogs need to get out.

Then they aren't built strong enough Mine are two ply 3/4 inch cypress hung on bronze hinges with four #12 screws on each leaf.

You are correct, sir. They are not strong enough. They are marina doors, not seaway doors. And as long as we remember that fact, we're good. They look good and they are easy to open for that long early morning walk to the onshore head.
